I can improve on slowing down my response time. I tend to think and speak quickly, which isn't always effective in healthy communication. I liked the tip in one article about LARA (Listen/Affirm/Respond/Add) to help with making sure you are listening and communicate with your friend/partner/coworker and still getting your own needs met.

I’ve never heard of LARA! I really need to do this too!! I catch myself a lot telling myself to just listen and not respond!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?

I worked on this with my partner; he is particularly vigilant about expiration dates, so it was good to update him with the recent data/information about them. We were able to review our stock of food and keep some things longer, while placing expired food in the compost bin and recycling the packaging.

I have taken steps to start a composting program with Rush Sustainability for meetings in our department where food is served. We are still in progress to start this, but it has been a great feeling to connect with Rush Sustainability to make this happen, and slow food waste and help improve our sustainability footprint in Neurosurgery and here at Rush. I believe this is something we can incorporate this year and hopefully help other departments on campus see that it can be done!

In our administrative team meeting today, I introduced the idea of adding composting to our departmental events involving food, and it was very well received. I hope to implement this addition to our meetings in the coming months, after I've had the opportunity to educate participants on what is required.

Don't let the water run while washing hands/brushing teeth/washing dishes.
Only run the dishwasher when it's full and at night.

Last night I took a mending class at the Eco Flamingo. It was very informative, plus it included a mending kit so we could continue to reuse/repair garments instead of throwing them in the landfill; highly recommend!

Love this! I have been finding all cotton shower curtains and turning them into window curtains and couch covers. I would appreciate photos of repairs, too. :)
