James's actions
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Home
Indoor Air Quality
I will spend 10 minutes learning about how indoor air quality impacts health and commit to taking one action to improve indoor air quality in my living space.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
One Healthcare
Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
In Our Communities
Support a Sharing/Reuse Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors, or purchase items second-hand to reduce resource use.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 5 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 10 items.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 2 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
At Home
Reduce laundry detergent usage
Purchased an ozone generator and connected to my washer supply water line in the effort to dramatically reduce usage of laundry detergents. Allows the washing of clothes in cold water and keeps detergent chemicals from entering the water shed.
Health & Well-being
Healthy Hydration
I will improve hydration by drinking an additional 8oz of water each day. I will do this by drinking additional servings of water or by drinking water in place of other less healthy beverage options.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

James Berokoff 4/10/2025 9:40 AMI'm not good at taking a five minute shower but some of my son's are taking on the challenge for me!-
James Berokoff 4/14/2025 9:49 AMSon just yesterday asked, "do you still get points for 5-min shower?" He's said, "I did it again." He doesn't have long hair. Though I mentioned that he can rinse, turn off water, soap/shampoo up, then turn water back on for final rinse. Good luck! -
