At Work

Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!

Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.

Several years ago, I brought in mismatched metal silverware that I bought at garage sales for clinic staff to use (and wash and reuse) instead of single-use plastic utensils. Almost daily, I check the washed silverware to make sure it's clean and put it back in the drawer. Over time, I have noticed that the number of utensils used daily has gone from 2-3 up to 15-20. And when we have a clinic pitch-in, I sign up to "bring"/wash the silverware so even more single-use plastic is kept out of the landfill.

Julie, this example rocks. You are a sustainable breakroom champion! Imagine if we all did this, how much pollution we could avoid!

How could you encourage your coworkers to develop the habit of turning lights off?

Making at least four colorful signs to post in frequently used clinic rooms that say "Please turn off light when exiting room".

Not only does this save energy and money. Lately I've been thinking more and more that in our overstimulated, over-screened world that all of the unnecessary lights and things are tantamount to indoor light pollution. I'm more and more a believer that Lights Off is a mental health intervention that we could all stand to benefit from.
