REFLECTION QUESTIONOne HealthcareReprocessing single use devices reduces the amount of regulated medical waste. What are other ways healthcare facilities can reduce regulated medical waste?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:40 PMPossibly with recycling programs. Establishing recycling programs for materials like plastics, paper, and metals can divert waste from the RMW stream. Properly segregating recyclable materials can also reduce overall waste disposal costs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne HealthcareDid you learn anything that surprised you about the environmental impact of operating rooms? What are some barriers to greening ORs, and how can departments work together to help overcome these barriers?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:38 PMYes! High energy consumption! ORs are the most energy-intensive areas in hospitals, using up to six times more energy than other hospital spaces. This is primarily due to the need for stringent heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Lack of Awareness is a huge barrier. Healthcare professionals may not be fully aware of the environmental impact of their practices. This lack of awareness can hinder the adoption of sustainable practices. We can work together with education and training. Providing education and training to healthcare professionals about the environmental impact of their practices can increase awareness and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne HealthcareWhat surprised you most about the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health? What is one action you can take to make a positive impact?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:33 PMOne surprising aspect of the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health is the significant carbon footprint it generates. The healthcare sector is responsible for approximately 4-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This includes emissions from energy use in healthcare facilities, the production and disposal of medical supplies, and patient and staff transportation. To make a positive impact, an action that can be taken is to advocate for and support sustainable practices within healthcare settings like promoting energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources in healthcare facilities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:30 PMIn my area, the recycling is on a "every other" Thursday schedule. Plastics marked #1 and #2, metal cans, and glass bottles are collected together one week. Newspapers, mail, magazines, soft-covered books, and plain brown cardboard are collected together the next week. When I forget (which is often lol) I ask my neighbor :)-

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:27 PMAir Pollution: Exposure to pollutants like particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, including asthma, bronchitis, and heart attacks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/03/2025 3:25 PMHa! Yes, addicted is the right word. Unfortunately, I consume an unhealthy amount of candy, especially when I am stressed (which seems to be all the time!) I feel better now that I am trying to do better. I have been switching out candy for fruits and snacks like cheese etc.-
Lara Pes 4/04/2025 6:36 AMI feel you! I also consider myself addicted to sugar, especially when I'm stressed. I'm not a huge fan of candies, but I love pastries ;)

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkHow do sustainability and quality overlap? How can quality improvement methods help your organization sustain its sustainability initiatives?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/02/2025 4:51 PMHigh-quality products are typically more durable and have a longer lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This durability contributes to sustainability by minimizing waste and conserving resources. LCA evaluates the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle. By incorporating LCA into quality improvement efforts, your organization can make more informed decisions about materials, production processes, and end-of-life disposal, leading to more sustainable outcomes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesWhat is the most exciting thing that you learned about your community? Did you learn something about your community that will change the way you engage with it?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch? How did you feel after spending time outdoors?
Kimberley Crevecoeur 4/02/2025 11:01 AMI observed the tree in my backyard and took time to enjoy the birds and the breeze. I felt amazing afterwards. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingWhat is one way you would like to improve your communication skills? Why is constructive communication important at work and at home?
