  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home Shorter Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Farming and agriculture significantly impact all water systems. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by trying to save an ocean, start smaller. Consider what you choose to eat for one meal and commit to making choices that support local farms and sustainable agriculture.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

Lori Beth Crossley 4/30/2024 10:59 AM
Simplifying your environment requires you to see your needs, wants and traditional solutions differently which leads to more mindful and creative thinking. Instead of thinking about what you need to buy, you need to start with what you need to accomplish and then consider what items on hand could fill that need. Simplifying will help you build creativity if you aren't one when you start the process.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

My husband and I have set up a schedule for the next 4 months to hike a different local nature trail every other weekend starting the 1st week of May. We are using the AllTrails app which allows you to specify type of activity, difficulty and distance from house as well as links and directions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
One Healthcare Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I purchase bottles of water when I'm away from home and simply did not think about the fact I may become thirsty. I have decided to follow the same rule my sister has followed for the past few years - if I am leaving the house, I am bringing water with me. I don't have to think about where I am going, how long I will be out, the weather. I've scheduled a twice per day reminder on my phone for 30 days. In the morning and mid-afternoon I'm reminded to take water with me if I leave the house.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
At Home Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
Do you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?

We live in New England in an area that is water secure. However, I put a rule in place for our household over 20 years ago that no one was allowed to water the grass and we have kept to this rule. We're now considering redesigning our yard to mirror landscaping designs in areas that are water insecure to further reduce our use of water.

How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

I have always had access to a vehicle and was never reliant on public transportation. Every family had two cars. During the pandemic, we moved from 2 cars to 1 car. With lockdown, there was little impact to our lifestyle. Post pandemic I had focused on purchasing a new vehicle but came to realize that we were in a position to continue as a 1 car household without feeling penalized by not maintaining a 2nd vehicle.
