Deanna's actions

At Work

Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!

Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.

I will spend 15 minutes learning about the environmental footprint of the healthcare industry, how it impacts health, and ways I can help reduce it.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

One Healthcare

Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle

I will keep 8 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Practice the 5 r's

I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Switch to Cold Water

I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

At Home

Brush My Teeth Without Water Running

I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 2

At Home

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.

Do you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?

Living in a water rich area (Eugene, Oregon) where water literally falls from the sky abundantly in the spring, fall and winter, it can seem like water is an unlimited resource and I know this isn't true. I have started being more cognizant of turning off the water while brushing teeth and washing my face, and being more efficient in the shower.

New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

For 20 years I lived rurally and all food scraps went under a Cedar tree in the yard to be picked through by our critter neighbors (deer, raccoon, cats, and other animals). After moving back to "town" it never felt right to throw food scraps in the garbage, but I wasn't in a position to begin a compost pile. Several months ago I learned that we could put food scraps in our "green waste" bins. I've noticed a reduction in the amount of garbage our household produces.

I did not know that waste could go into the green waste bin. Thank you for sharing. I grew up on a farm, so we would throw it into the garden and didnt even think more about it.
