I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 2 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Work
Review Allina Health's Climate Action Plan
Allina Health's sustainability program is one important way we support the people we serve by minimizing the impact of our physical footprint. Check out our Climate Action Plan on the AKN which will fulfill our pledge to: reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, become more resilient to the impacts of climate change, and engage with staff and our community to promote climate education and encourage action.

Allina Health Environmental Sustainability AKN Page Review
Check out the Allina Health Environmental Sustainability AKN page to find case studies and resources.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Home
Learn about Planting for Pollinators
Read up on pollinators and pollinator habitat. Get tips and access to resources on how to transform your home environment into a pollinator haven.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
Health & Well-being
Go Get a Check Up
I will make 1 appointments to support my health and well-being (primary care provider, dental, vision, etc.)
At Work
Make 5 Rheaply posts
Make reusable items available to coworkers and donation partners
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
At Home
Plant a container garden
Plant a container garden. Choosing this to replace a little bit of monoculture grass and have a small part of my food as locally grown as possible. Also, blooming varieties of herbs will be good for insects and pollinators.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Joyce Fitzgerald 4/24/2025 7:19 AMRelated to some of our posts on pollinator gardening--if you are eyeing a patch of monocultural sod grass that could be replaced somewhere, I recommend The Book of Wilding: A Practical Guide to Rewilding Big and Small by Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell. I finished reading it last night and feel inspired!
If reading a book is not for you right now, there are many lectures and interviews with Isabella Tree available on YouTube and podcasts. I appreciate how she discusses making choices within a budget, and the gray areas to think about. -
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/23/2025 2:44 PMCool article on refrigerators that run without electricity! They are being tested in hospitals and clinics and were created by teens. https://www.good.is/teens-invent-fridge-runs-on-salt -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeWhat other ways do you save energy and water at home? What has helped you make these changes part of your routine?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeSwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What other actions do you take to be more energy efficient at home?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/18/2025 8:29 AMI've been replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs over time, and just swapped out the last two! Also, I put two lights that I forget to turn off on timers, so they switch off automatically. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWhat was something new you learned from reviewing the AKN page?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/18/2025 8:20 AMI learned more about how our sustainable landscaping practices are beneficial for our regional watershed. Our pollinator slope and stormwater filters make a difference.-
Suzanne Hansen 4/18/2025 3:11 PMFor all those of you at ANW or the Commons, check out the pollinator slope next to the Purple Ramp. We put up some really nice signs. Here's the electronic version too: https://www.allinahealth.org/abbott-northwestern-hospital/campus-updates/environmental-sustainability/landscaping

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/17/2025 10:17 AMIf addiction is continuing to eat sugar even when I know it is harming me, then yes. I'm happy to say that I feel much more in control around sweets than I did at the beginning of the challenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne HealthcareWhat are the benefits of connecting with new colleagues? How have you fostered meaningful connections with others?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/16/2025 7:44 PMThe best benefit recently has been opportunity to learn more about our collaborative tools and software. Working on projects together fosters meaningful connection for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeWhat was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/11/2025 8:22 AMI put patched a torn tote bag, patched two pairs of pants with holes and replaced missing snaps on a jacket. So a few useful items are back in action. YouTube is where I learn to fix things the most, but I also use books on bicycle repair and sewing.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesDid procuring local ingredients impact the way you think about food or the meals you decided to prepare? If so, how?
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/10/2025 7:53 AMLocal ingredients are not abundant in Minnesota this time of year, so I had to think about where to shop and what to do with the ingredients available. We do have more greenhouses online every year, so this should be easier with time. I found good building blocks for meals--sweet potatoes, spinach, arugula, eggs, and tofu made with Minnesota grown soybeans from MinnTofu. -
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/10/2025 6:52 AMI'm hearing from staff whose recycling and trash bins are missing labels or have damaged labels. If you want to order more, they are available from from Taylor Communications- Smartworks.
