    As the Summer approaches.

    • Refuse unwanted freebies at trade shows and conferences
    • Baking parchment - grease the cake pan/ silicon mat
    • Keep lemon fresh by storing them in a glass jar full of water. Add all the lemons in a jar, put water and place them in the refrigerator.
    • Great Website to check out- https://myplasticfreelife.com/
    • Store those berries in jars - Steps for Storing Berries in Mason Jars
Remove berries from original packaging and place them in a colander. Give them a quick, gentle rinse under cool or cold, running water.
      1. Transfer berries to paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Spread them out in an even layer to allow airflow between them to expedite drying.
      2. Check on berries after an hour to see if they’re dry. If not, give them a gentle stir with your hands or gently pat them dry.
      3. Once completely dry, move them to a clean mason jar. Cover with a lid and refrigerate.
      4. Check on berries about 1 hour after refrigeration to see if there is any noticeable moisture on the jar or berries. If so, remove them from the jar and repeat the drying process.

    Unplug electrical appliances:
Putting appliances on standby and leaving them plugged in does not prevent them from consuming electricity. In fact, they continue to consume 10% of electricity! It is therefore essential to unplug them when you don't need them. The same applies to telephone chargers, which are too often left on the sockets.

    The 5 R's:
Reduce - We have been trying to opt out of getting receipts and having them sent digitally or none at all.
Reuse - We upcycle our old linen (sheet/towels) and donate them to animal shelters.
Recycle - We have taken excess aluminum cans (from family functions) or even stored cans and when a good amount is collected we take then straight to the metal recyclers where they pay you by weight. Collected the cash and made a donation. Rethink - Napkins. We switched to cloth napkins. Paper Towels - we cut back, by not using them in the kitchen. Still trying to cut back more, but with rescue animals and fostering it's a little hard.
Refuse - When ordering take-out, we refuse straws, plates and plasticware.

I know composting is not possible for everyone, especially if you have HOA rules, live in an apartment or physically can't do it. I know each of these scenarios all too well. We lived in the Middle East for almost 7 years and composting in that heat, desert rats and with lot's of sand is not ideal. We found that composting is still possible with Bokashi, see how it works. https://bokashiliving.com/how-does-it-work/
Supplies can be found on their website and Amazon (which also had similar products, but I haven't tested) It's well worth it and if you have house plants, all the better. Check it out.

    At Home Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Back to composting for the Spring. So much less waste in the trash now that we can get back to doing this. Will start adding leaves and yard scrap after we have a week of warmer nights (above 50F/mid-May) so we don't disturb larvae (pollinators) and beneficial insects.
