Rachel's actions
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Work
Greener Purchasing
I will select a greener option when purchasing supplies, such as products that have environmental certifications, less packaging, or other environmental attributes, or come from local vendors.
At Work
Go Paperless
I will avoid printing 10 pieces of paper by "going digital" and printing double-sided whenever possible.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 5 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 2 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Work
Work From Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please! How could you encourage your coworkers to develop the habit of turning lights off?
Rachel Flynn 4/11/2024 12:07 PMNearly all of the lights in the new Gillette office space are on motion sensors so turning them off happens if we leave and/or sit very still -
Rachel Flynn 4/08/2024 8:25 AMOff to a good start, I think. Looking forward to more consistent nice weather to be able to do more outdoor stuff -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Learn the Truth about Expiration DatesWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Rachel Flynn 4/05/2024 8:06 AMI try to reduce food waste by not buying produce without a specific meal/recipe/use in mind for it. Getting a good deal on a sack of onions at CostCo doesn't do us much good if we won't be able to consume that many onions before they turn to mush. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Brush My Teeth Without Water RunningDo you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?
Rachel Flynn 4/05/2024 7:59 AMIn Minnesota we think that we've got an abundance of water, but most of the state is actually in some level of drought status because of such a dry winter on top of a dry summer last year. So being aware of not letting good water go to waste is top of mind.
