Joe's actions

At Work

Turn It Off

I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

At Work

Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!

Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

COMPLETED 3

Had the opportunity and privilege to volunteer at the Aspire House on Earth Day with my fellow IUHealth team members. It was a great time, planting flowers, cleaning the neighborhood, and meeting other individuals. Very glad to of had this opportunity!

Awesome Joe and all those who volunteered with you. Those kinds of things really connect what we do inside the four walls of the hospital to the every health conditions in our community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
What was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?

I replaced a belt in my vacuum cleaner that had broken and I fear the entire thing had died. Fortunately with a new belt, it was good to go!

Awesome. So much waste can be avoided by taking the time and effort to troubleshoot and make a small repair. Not only great for the environment, but a lot easier on the wallet.

My family and I try hard to reuse items, specifically in the kitchen when there is so much single use items. We save and reuse all jars and now we have managed to no longer have the need for plastic Ziploc bags for snacks, we just place these items in reusable jars. It have been helpful to reduce waste and save money by not having to buy these plastic bags.

Absolutely! We still keep some plastic bowls in the back of the cupboard in case we need them in a pinch. Sturdy glass jars are great for on-the-go snacking, running errands with the kids. And I recently ordered some stainless steel bowls to be even more durable. I'm sure they have a bigger environmental footprint but these things will basically last forever and won't add to the plastic pollution crisis.
