Laura's actions
One Healthcare
Green Gratitude
I will recognize 1 colleague(s) for their sustainability efforts by thanking them on our team feed, in-person, by email, and/or through my organization's recognition platforms.
One Healthcare
Random Act of Kindness
I will promote a positive environment and uplift others by performing 1 random act(s) of kindness.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Work
Report a Leak
I will prevent water from being wasted by reporting one or more leaky faucets, toilets, or other water leaks to my organization's facilities team for repair.
At Work
Go Paperless
I will avoid printing 20 pieces of paper by "going digital" and printing double-sided whenever possible.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
One Healthcare
Strength in Numbers
I will form a new green team or healthcare sustainability group.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
In Our Communities
Plant Trees
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard. Check out resources for which tree species are best to plant in your area.
In Our Communities
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 48 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 25 items.

Laura Hamme 4/22/2024 3:55 PMI had a great weekend. My daughter and I cleaned up trash in and around our community for Earth Day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Laura Hamme 4/18/2024 5:19 PMSomeone dropped our laminator and broke it. Before purchasing another, I took it apart and was able to repair the break. I am super proud of myself, and was totally encouraged because of this challenge. It was not difficult at all, and I was intimidated.-
Brian Nelson (SWMC) 4/19/2024 12:07 PMNice work! Thank goodness for Youtube! :) -
Jeff Babic 4/19/2024 5:27 AMGood job, Laura! In this throwaway world repairing can be very rewarding.
Although there’s some risk in attempting a repair on something otherwise destined for the landfill. Follow best safety practices (especially when it comes to something that uses electricity) or ask for some help if you’re not sure.

Laura Hamme 4/10/2024 3:44 PMI just joined a beach clean up crew! I am very excited to get to explore new beaches in my area and help make them beautiful!-
Christina Moran (PHMG-B'ham) 4/10/2024 4:43 PMThat is a fantastic idea and a nice way to see other beaches.

Laura Hamme 4/09/2024 4:56 PMMy family and I went camping over the weekend at a USFS cabin. After the winter snow and now that the grass is not yet tall, we made a game of finding garbage and picking it up. The person with the most trash got to be guardian of the hammock. They had fun and were really motivated to be the winner. We removed 6 bags of trash from there!-
Brenda Lee - (PHSW-BHS) 4/09/2024 5:27 PM
What a fun way to teach your children about cleaning their environment. I always taught mine to pick up trash as they saw it, but if I had made a game out of it they probably wouldn't have taken so long to get into the spirit of it!

Laura Hamme 4/08/2024 10:03 AMGreat. We also have visitors at work today that are from Bellingham Washington. They are excited to hear about some of the ways we are reducing waste.-
Karla Strand (SSC) 4/09/2024 3:32 PMWay to go! It's awesome that you educated some folks about waste reduction.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Switch to Cold WaterHow else can you reduce the environmental footprint of clothing and textiles?
Laura Hamme 4/02/2024 2:51 PMI try to purchase only clothes and textiles made of recycled materials. I also recycle the clothes themselves. We try to purchase natural fabrics like wool, that are sustainable. Some clothing manufacturers are great about accepting recycled items, and making recycled items. We purchase from these types of companies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Go PaperlessHave you considered doing a review of your work practices to see if there are opportunities to go digital with a process that has historically been paper-based at your organization?
Laura Hamme 4/02/2024 2:48 PMPeaceHealth offered an ability to e-fax. This reduces so much paper! We no longer have to print out papers and then fax them, just to shred them once the fax is complete. I can fax directly from my CPU. We have not gone totally paperless, but are making big strides. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Turn It OffWas this action easy to add to your daily routine? Why or why not?
Laura Hamme 4/02/2024 2:46 PMYes, it was easy to add to my daily routine. Our clinic offers a one step button to turn off my computer. Instead of just logging out at the end of the day, I click shut down instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Practice the 5 r'sWhich of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?
Laura Hamme 4/02/2024 2:44 PMReuse is easy at home, but much more difficult at work. I work in a laboratory, so reuse is difficult as most items are single use only. I also live on a remote island in Alaska. There is no recycling offered here except for aluminum. This makes it very easy for me to reduce and reuse. I really think about things before I decide what we really need and how to get those items we really need without the extra waste. -
Laura Hamme 4/01/2024 11:17 AMMy echochallenge is going great. I worked with my family at home to repair a broken mixer, have changed protocol in the laboratory to reduce waste by not printing out normal QC values since we document and sign all values by hand.
