Suzanne Hansen 4/14/2025 2:05 PMI had to dig around for a photo. This is my son and a friend who helped me plant with planting in 2020. We replanted the whole front slope (about 3 times more than what is in the photo). It keeps the soil quite nicely now and is much more drought resistant than the plants next to it. The neighbor kids come over and want to help now.
Minnesota has an excellent Lawns to Legumes program that helps people plant pollinator-friendly yards. They have guidance and some funding. For more info see: https://bwsr.state.mn.us/l2l -

Thank you, Suzanne, for piquing my interest. I did a quick search for both prairie & spring ephemerals. I live in the northeast so I am curious about what I can grow, cultivate, nurture up here. I participate in No Mow May (which probably makes my elderly neighbors cringe). I will be researching and learning more about native plants. Who knows what I may discover! -

I don't have a yard at my apartment but I do have a community garden plot and the pollinators LOVE my giant lavender bush! Also seem to enjoy my Echinacea plants. -

Native grasslands are really the planetary workhorses of carbon sequestration. Sometimes it seems like trees get all the love, which is unfair to grasslands. When you look at all the ecosystem services that provide, prairie and pollinator gardens are tops!
*The Great American Lawn* is one of the greatest untapped resources in protecting our environmental health. For those of us with lawns, this is something we can do this year:
- mow less...save air pollution, save money, save time, save water
- trim less...save microplastics pollution, save time, save water
- fertilize less...prevent algal blooms in ponds, streams, and oceans

I love prairie. I live near St. Paul and enjoy all the nature preserves that are around for hiking and viewing the flowers!
