DAVID's actions
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home
Indoor Air Quality
I will spend 20 minutes learning about how indoor air quality impacts health and commit to taking one action to improve indoor air quality in my living space.
Health & Well-being
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 4 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Work
2025 Pledge at Work
I pledge to take one action that improves the sustainability of my organization in 2025. It can be an action from this challenge or another action that improves resource stewardship.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 3 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

DAVID HOKSCH (SJMC - Supply Chain) 4/24/2025 8:50 AMOur family has always been active recyclers. During this Ecochallenge we've been focusing on reducing the amount of plastic we use; particularly the packaging from the items we purchase. While we've had some success, it was a little discouraging to see how few alternatives are actually available.-

I feel this today too! Hope your day gets moving to help you wake up. I am not a coffee person (I do drink tea), so caffeine is less of an issue (or help) -
Paul Goodenough 4/21/2025 9:01 AMI love my caffeine. A few other things that help me when that isn't enough:
- cold shower
- step outside for a few moments to get some fresh air
- chug a cup of water in the morning
- hardest of all for me is getting to bed on time and getting decent sleep. With little kids and my night owl upbringing it is really hard. But getting more rest is part of my Ecochallenge.
Have a great week!
