Ian's actions
Health & Well-being
Gratitude
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for every day.
At Work
Go Paperless
I will avoid printing 5 pieces of paper by "going digital" and printing double-sided whenever possible.
At Home
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 1 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 10 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Work
Drop off an e-waste item for recycling at the sustainability Open House!
Stop by the Environmental Sustainability Team's Friday open house during Earth Month to drop off an unused/dead e-waste item for recycling with PCs for People! Open House is every Friday on the Armour Academic Center 1st floor (alley side) every Friday from 10a-1pm.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Ian Hughes 4/22/2024 8:37 PMEarth Day is every day - spread the word! :) -
Ian Hughes 4/17/2024 9:51 AMThis looks like a rad virtual event! Hope to "see" some of y'all there! :) https://nam.edu/event/climate-and-health-day-of-the-us-climate-action-summit/?utm_source=Climate+for+Health+-+Newsletter&utm_campaign=257df76b3d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_04_12_02_30&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-257df76b3d-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D&mc_cid=257df76b3d&mc_eid=eb5ec20248 -
Ian Hughes 4/16/2024 1:04 PMStarted work early today so I could ride up to Eco the Flamingo and pick up some more reusable, silicone stasher bags for my daughter's daily lunch! Haven't used disposable plastic baggies in her lunch box for all of kindergarten and 1st grade, and we've stopped buying them all together! :) -
Ian Hughes 4/15/2024 7:58 AMOne week away from Earth Day! Excited that my kiddo's school is doing a family neighborhood litter pickup and picnic this evening! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Drop off an e-waste item for recycling at the sustainability Open House!Have you ever repaired a broken electronic item, rather than replacing it?
Ian Hughes 4/15/2024 7:55 AMYES! I repaired an iPhone that had a broken screen and case (took a nasty tumble down some concrete steps) using a local vendor and not only got it looking brand new, but also saved a ton of $$ in the process! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Repair an ItemWhat was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?
Ian Hughes 4/07/2024 8:58 AMI repaired my personal MacBook after ordering a new memory card, borrowing tools from a friend, and installing it myself! Works like new, and for a fraction of the price (both in dollars and environmental impact!) of buying new! :) -
Ian Hughes 4/05/2024 7:38 AMHas anyone tried "pooch paper" as a paper alternative to dog poo bags? I LOVE them and haven't gone back to plastic bags for the past two years! :)-
Candice Miller 4/05/2024 9:00 AMI have not but most certainly will have to check it out, Ian. Right now, I use compostable, plant-based bags. Thanks for sharing!

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Diverse and Locally-Owned BusinessesWhat did you enjoy most about shopping at a diverse and/or locally-owned business? What are some of your favorite diverse and/or locally-owned businesses to shop at in your area?
Ian Hughes 4/04/2024 1:55 PMWent to Olivia's Market for dinner supplies (hand/local made fresh pasta and bread!) last night, and hitting Huaraches for dinner tonight (walking distance from my house)! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items, but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? What tips do you have for others who are trying to form a habit of using reusable bags?
Ian Hughes 4/02/2024 1:13 PMIf I get into a situation like that, I ask if they have a box as sometimes stores have boxes you can use. I'll also just use a cart or basket to transfer the items to my car or bike and load them up loose for transportation back home. Get into the habit of always having a reusable bag with you. Tuck one in your purse or backpack or briefcase so it is always with you. Build that habit and you'll always have one when you need it. Some are made to tuck into themselves so you can have a compact bag at the ready!
