  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
What did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?

I learned that "use by" dates indicate the last day a product is safe to consume, while "expiration" or "best before" dates refer to the period during which a product maintains its optimal quality and flavor. After the "use by" date, there's a higher risk of food spoilage and potential illness. "Best before" dates, on the other hand, are a guideline for peak quality, but the food may still be safe to eat after that date if stored properly. By making a menu each week, I can leverage produce purchased in other recipes that week, reducing waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work
Do I need a lid for my cup today? Or can I skip it? Have I tried rinsing and reusing my lids? Do I know where the recycling bin is closer to my working are? Can I just bring my own cup or tumbler instead?

What works for me is putting my phone away after dinner. Watching a show, talking a walk, or enjoying music before bed has been a game changer.

I've been doing a lot of walking lately, along with enjoying live local music. It has really helped me stay grounded and leave the stresses of life behind.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    In Our Communities
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community? What was the most common item you found littered?

    Kimberly Hughes's avatar

    • Nature Steward 🌳
It is amazing to me that most people will walk right by litter, some even stepping over it, without a thought to pick it up and dispose of it. Most of the items I find on the hospital grounds are masks, gloves, and wrappers from medical supplies. When I'm out in my community, the items vary widely. I use my dog's poo bags to pick up items when I'm out walking him and always carry a small vial of hand sanitizer for times when I don't have a bag readily available. I am very cautious about items that are typically utilized for illicit drug use (i.e., aluminum foil, soda cans) and will not pick those up unless I have a bag.

What is the most exciting thing that you learned about your community? Did you learn something about your community that will change the way you engage with it?

We are moving from Lynnwood to Bothell and I really enjoy buying fresh produce and locally-made items from farmer markets. I'm on the hunt for any Bothell and surrounding area weekend markets. If you are aware of any, please let me know!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Kimberly Hughes's avatar
    Kimberly Hughes 4/29/2025 7:49 AM
    • Nature Steward 🌳
Since I started composting, I've noticed that I'm throwing away less food and the majority are peels and discarded portions of vegetable and fruits. I have a small compost collection bin in my kitchen, which I empty once per week into my yard/compost waste bin. By actively recycling and composting, I've been able to reduce my trash container to the smallest offered by Waste Management.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare
Did you learn anything that surprised you about the environmental impact of operating rooms? What are some barriers to greening ORs, and how can departments work together to help overcome these barriers?

    Kimberly Hughes's avatar
    Kimberly Hughes 4/28/2025 10:14 AM
    • Nature Steward 🌳
I support the Perioperative team in my role and was impressed with their holistic approach to sustainability - from waste audits (below pic) to education on what qualifies as recyclable. I was very surprised by how much OR waste ends up in landfills. ORs produce over 30% of hospital waste and it is estimated that just one surgical procedure produces between 146 and 232 kg of CO2.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What other ways do you save energy and water at home? What has helped you make these changes part of your routine?

When I was raising my daughter, we had a "lights out" commitment. Lights out during the daytime hours and only used when absolutely needed. In the evening, we minimized lights and now we only use LED for both indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Do you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?

I'm fortunate in that I live in a water rich area. However, I operate as if I live in a deficit. I focus on plants in my yard that are drought-tolerant and are native to the area. We installed water-efficient toilets and use low-flow shower heads. This year, I'm researching rain collection barrels with a plan to install one this fall.
