Kathy's actions

At Home

Brush My Teeth Without Water Running

I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

At Work

Turn It Off

I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

At Work

Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!

Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Health & Well-being

Healthy Hydration

I will improve hydration by drinking an additional 16oz of water each day. I will do this by drinking additional servings of water or by drinking water in place of other less healthy beverage options.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Needs Vs. Wants

I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates

I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

At Home

Practice the 5 r's

I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Health & Well-being

Do Nature Activities

I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 15 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Shorter Showers

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I try to get 16 oz water in as early as possible because I just don't yet enjoy the water. Left to myself, I would drink unhealthy iced coffee lattes:(

I am working through my love-hate relationship with coffee! Love the taste and the warmth, hate the frequent trips to the restroom! As we speak, I am drinking a big cup of water to at least try to stave of my craving. So far it's working!

I hear ya! I do the same with a big smoothie in the morning, so at least I get some fresh produce in once per day.

Hah, I managed a 4 min shower that was not rushed feeling! I realized that the longer showers are just really to "relax"

What did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?

    Kathy Jackson's avatar
    Kathy Jackson 4/17/2025 6:06 AM
I had no idea that infant formula is the only "food" required to have an expiration date! I will never look at the dates the same way again.

I don't know if you saw this documentary called "Food, Insecure" but IU Health efforts feature prominently. It is a really powerful example of the intersection between food deserts, food insecurity, and food waste.

    At Home
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Kathy Jackson's avatar
    Kathy Jackson 4/15/2025 8:13 AM
Dumping waste in the water impacts so much. I read that scientists have found plastic in the deepest parts of the ocean. Cutting down trees causes soil erosion by and into bodies of water.
Locally, our lake owner's society wants to dredge the lake. While this can help prevent flooding since the lake is becoming much more shallow and increase space for boats, the water will become turbid and could affect the fish, turtles, cranes, geese, etc that depend on the lake. Questioning where the dredging will go and how long it will last.

I never would have realized the fertilizer run off from yards! We don't use it but it sure gets pushed in subdivision. I also love the idea of native plants for the area.

what a powerful example that hits close to home

two of the four ponds in our subdivision are dealing with algae problems. The algae problem is in part due to run off from fertilized lawns.

The great news is that changing our neighborhood habits has lots of benefits! Cleaner water, less money on fertilizer is money in our pocket or more money to spend on native plants!

Which of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?

I started looking at how I can repurpose items. That takes some creativity of which I don't have a lot:-) My husband is really great at fixing items though and he is helping with that. My bedside fan broke, and he was able to simply clean it of dust and got it working again.

spent some time learning about fast fashion! The next time I need some shirts, I think I'll head over to the thrift store to see what might meet the need.

    • Kathy Jackson's avatar

I'm definitely going to do more of this. Also, older styles come back around regularly especially if you avoid shirts with pictures.

I still have some shirts that I got from a thrift store twenty years ago. So those shirts are probably thirty years old or more at this point. And I even wore one of them this weekend!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
What other ways do you save energy and water at home? What has helped you make these changes part of your routine?

    Kathy Jackson's avatar
    Kathy Jackson 4/14/2025 7:05 AM
I do laundry either in the early morning or late evening with a full load. For whites especially, it means waiting longer in between to get a full load. I'm careful about monitoring the amount of detergent I use to prevent microplastics as much as possible. I use warm or cold water and never use hot water.
We choose not to water the lawn or apply chemicals for weed control. It may not be unbroken stretch of grass but we have lots of rabbits and squirrels that are safe around our home.

Great tips Kathy! I'm not sure if this applies to us in Indiana, but it is becoming more and more common that electricity rates are time-based - off-peak energy use costs us less.

A nature-friendly yard also costs way less!

How could you encourage your coworkers to develop the habit of turning lights off?

    Kathy Jackson's avatar

Working from home means that I just nudge my husband to do the same. Are you finished in here, Hon? Could you grab the light?

Was this action easy to add to your daily routine? Why or why not?

    Kathy Jackson's avatar

This was easy to add to my routine. I used a note on my computer monitor for a few days until it became habit to shut it down every afternoon.

You can do it Kathy! Give yourself some grace. You aren't alone. I think I can relate. I'm a drummer and I'm an absolute sucker for cool new gear.

My EAP counselor has given me a great piece of advice for my "want vs. need" internal dialogue: "Your future self will thank you" for making the more sustainable choice.
