One recent action that stemmed from the work of the ESSC at Orlando Health was changing the generic product we stocked for albuterol metered dose inhalers (MDIs). MDIs are medicaitons used by patients with certain lung diseases like asthma and COPD to help control their disease and treat symptoms. The propellant used in these medicaitons is the largest medication source of greenhouse gases in the United States because it is a refrigerant with an outsized impact on trapping heat. While we look to federal legislators and pharmaceutical companies to take action to change the type of propellant used in these MDIs, we are reviewing which choices are best currently, and found that the product we were stocking had a higher impact than other options. Now we will be stocking the best product, a generic version of Proventil, to decrease the impact of the heat-trapping effect of the metered dose inhalers we dispense at Orlando Health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne HealthcareDoes working with others toward a common cause motivate or inspire you to act differently than you otherwise would? How can collaboration lead to more sustainable outcomes?
Shauna Junco 4/10/2025 8:57 AMYes. Working with others in the sustainability space is what gives me so much hope and keeps me motivated to keep it going! I am so grateful for everyone on my team for the EcoChallenge! I also am so inspired by all of our team members on the ESSC, working in so many different areas of our health system, who are evaluating best sustainability practices and working to implement them. -

The ESSC is made up of over 40 team members. They include representatives from diverse backgrounds; positions at APH, ORMC, SSH, and corporate; and many departments including engineering, facilities management, facilities planning and design, environmental services, waste management, OR Operations, regulatory, inpatient and outpatient clinical services, community relations, communications, infection prevention, Human Resources, media relations, and emergency management! We continue to grow and are amazed at all of the great work being done across so many departments and by so many people. -

I found 3 more Monarch caterpillars
And have added them to the protected screen holding milkweed. I now have two chrysalis and hope to see more over the next few weeks! -

I found out because I was keeping apps open on my computer like emails I needed to follow-up on and internet browser to read articles later, even if I shut down my computer the power would stay on. Now I’m using an electronic appointment on my calendar with a to-do list instead, which is more effective anyway. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Shauna Junco 4/03/2025 10:56 AM- Green Team Leader 🤝
I typically try to avoid refined sugar, but it has been sneaking up on me lately. Sugar grown in the US is burned during harvesting instead of using mechanical techniques as is done in other parts of the world like Brazil. For this reason in parts of South Florida communities near these farms face terrible air pollution during the burning season, resulting in high rates of lung diseases like asthma, especially in school children. I try to avoid sugar in general by not eating sweets that I don’t know where they come from (I’m not always successful!) and using alternative sweeteners when cooking like maple syrup, but when I do use sugar at home I buy organic to decrease chemical exposure and because organic sugar (in Florida at least) is not allowed to be burned at harvesting. -

Hey Orlando Health EcoChallenge team! We are doing a great job, and are in the top quarter of teams currently. Keep up the great work! I'll be posting more about our Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Committee over the next few days, but let me know if you have any questions or thoughts about the committee or this challenge in the meantime! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWas this action easy to add to your daily routine? Why or why not?
Shauna Junco 4/02/2025 11:03 AM- Green Team Leader 🤝
I found out that my computer is turning back on if it has power or is plugged in, so I will do some investigating with IT to figure out why this is the case! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch? How did you feel after spending time outdoors?
Shauna Junco 4/01/2025 7:52 PM- Green Team Leader 🤝
I went into my garden and looked for a monarch catipillar on Milkweed I planted. I saw a big one and put it in a net to protect it from predators. Hoping to release a healthy monarch in a few weeks! It made me feel happy and hopeful.
