Deirdre's actions
In Our Communities
Use Social Media to Educate
Educate the greater community on eco-friendly practices via social media
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
At Work
Quality Improvement
I commit to dedicating 60 minutes to exploring my organization's quality improvement resources and examining how quality improvement methodologies can support sustainability projects.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 20 items.
At Work
2025 Pledge at Work
I pledge to take one action that improves the sustainability of my organization in 2025. It can be an action from this challenge or another action that improves resource stewardship.
Health & Well-being
Healthy Hydration
I will improve hydration by drinking an additional 12oz of water each day. I will do this by drinking additional servings of water or by drinking water in place of other less healthy beverage options.
Health & Well-being
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 20 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkHow do you plan to make sure you meet your pledge by the end of the year? What has helped you be successful in meeting longer term goals or resolutions in the past?
Deirdre Kelleher 4/23/2025 10:15 AMI pledge to revamp the waste sorting in our office break room by the end of 2025! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Deirdre Kelleher 4/21/2025 9:35 AMThe most important thing I learned from my waste-sorting tour was that NYP has to pay for ALL trash removal and contracts with facilities that are different from NYC. A good motto for teaching recycling within the hospital might be "NYP is NOT NYC: We recycle differently!". I'm going to use this knowledge to help improve recycling in our break room. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Deirdre Kelleher 4/10/2025 10:09 AMAll of our cleaning products - shampoo, face wash, laundry detergent -- and our lotions/creams/makeup - all end up in the water when we take a shower/wash our clothes. Minimizing the amount and types of chemicals we add to our water -- especially in places with minimal water treatment plants will help preserve the quality of water for all living things.
