REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Donate BloodWhy do you donate blood?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Strength in NumbersDoes working with others toward a common cause motivate or inspire you to act differently than you otherwise would? How can collaboration lead to more sustainable outcomes?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:47 AMWhen you have a team of individuals you create accountability and momentum. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Climate Change Impacts on HealthHow does climate change create and exacerbate health inequities?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:47 AMLess well-resourced individuals have difficulty with access and affordability of health care creating health inequities. Climate change exacerbates many health conditions, further exacerbating this inequities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Environmental Footprint of HealthcareWhat surprised you most about the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health? What is one action you can take to make a positive impact?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:45 AMThat it is responsible for fully 8% of the US carbon footprint.
Small things matter - reduce the use of expensive testing. I have the privilege of teaching medical students and new physicians and in every clinical setting we talk about how to reduce overall medical consumption while still having the same (or better) patient outcomes. I had this conversation this week with an ENT resident and we avoided several tests on patients by considering this approach. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Sustainable HealthcareBriefly describe the issue(s) you learned about. How did this information impact you?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:43 AMThe need for health systems to lead in sustainability and that little things matter - I specifically learned how we could develop sustainable plantings on this campus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Network for ChangeWhat are the benefits of connecting with new colleagues? How have you fostered meaningful connections with others?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:43 AMIt have have good ideas or outcomes or stories - those can only spread by making new connections - I attended the GMUL annual meeting this week and connected with many new colleagues around the ideas of helping those less well-resourced in our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Volunteer in My CommunityHow did volunteering in your community make you feel? What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:42 AMI always feel great - I did some volunteer work this week for the Greater Milwaukee Urban League and helping to support jobs, home ownership, health and education for those who are less well-resourced in our community is CRUCIAL for a vibrant and healthy community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:40 AMWe live on Lake MI - the Great Lakes make up 21% of the earth's usable fresh water. We have an ethical and moral responsibility to ensure that we are doing more to enhance the cleanliness and sustainability of Lake MI or it will not only impact our local region but many, many people far more distant than our region. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Buy From a Farmers MarketDid procuring local ingredients impact the way you think about food or the meals you decided to prepare? If so, how?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:39 AMYes, it allows you to support those in your community. Also, locally sourced things simply taste better. One of my friends says, unless I have a locally grown tomato, it is like putting cardboard on my food. I mean, that might be a little extreme, but I get the point! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Diverse and Locally-Owned BusinessesWhat did you enjoy most about shopping at a diverse and/or locally-owned business? What are some of your favorite diverse and/or locally-owned businesses to shop at in your area?
Joe Kerschner 4/19/2024 8:37 AMI love MKE andWI - shopping locally creates a vibrant and diverse economy close to home which only enhances where we live.
