Christopher's actions
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
One Healthcare
Medical Device Reprocessing
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the items my organization collects for medical device reprocessing and share this information with colleagues.
One Healthcare
Call Someone
Whether it is to hear his/her/their voice, it will get myself outside myself and think of the other person over the phone.
One Healthcare
Green Gratitude
I will recognize 4 colleague(s) for their sustainability efforts by thanking them on our team feed, in-person, by email, and/or through my organization's recognition platforms.
One Healthcare
Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
One Healthcare
Random Act of Kindness
I will promote a positive environment and uplift others by performing 5 random act(s) of kindness.
One Healthcare
Climate Change Impacts on Health
I will spend 240 minutes learning about the ways climate change impacts health.
At Work
Drop off an e-waste item for recycling at the sustainability Open House!
Stop by the Environmental Sustainability Team's Friday open house during Earth Month to drop off an unused/dead e-waste item for recycling with PCs for People! Open House is every Friday on the Armour Academic Center 1st floor (alley side) every Friday from 10a-1pm.
In Our Communities
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
In Our Communities
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and/or meat from a local farmers market or food co-op to make 2 locally-sourced meals.
In Our Communities
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
In Our Communities
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, or walking and biking instead.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 10 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Volunteer in My CommunityHow did volunteering in your community make you feel? What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Christopher King 4/27/2024 8:28 PMGiving back has been something my parents have instilled in me, and gratefully has been something my school has implemented this practice as well. A sense of joy and gratitude of giving of myself in ways that can assist anywhere from 1-100 individuals/animals/trees - it feels amazing. One thing to do is to transfer a little kindness to someone else - that is priceless, in my opinion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Medical Device ReprocessingReprocessing single use devices reduces the amount of regulated medical waste. What are other ways healthcare facilities can reduce regulated medical waste?
Christopher King 4/27/2024 8:20 PMEncourage as often as possible, perhaps in huddles for certain units to recycle certain devices that are able to be "reprocessed." This trickles down from providers to all staff, and non-clinical staff. A little goes a long way, and if we are mindful, it can save possibly thousands (money-wise) for future generations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Buy From a Farmers MarketDid procuring local ingredients impact the way you think about food or the meals you decided to prepare? If so, how?
Christopher King 4/27/2024 8:18 PMAs one who has had the opportunity to travel to countries that may not have a lot: food-wise; or perhaps have smaller accommodations for their food, it allows me to be mindful. My family of 2 (+2 dogs) with two people that work opposite schedules, it is important to sustain the products that are bought locally so those that grow them can continue to provide. This has always been important for me; thus shopping every couple days, keeps food from being wasted, and more inclined on purchasing as needed and diversifying our diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Christopher King 4/27/2024 8:15 PMNoise pollution. This is something that sometimes cannot be contained, unless there are certain times of the day in which: construction is done, allowing people that work 9-5PM - to perhaps get a full night's rest -
Christopher King 4/23/2024 3:39 PMA day at a time, I am enjoying giving back to what is freely given to me -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Christopher King 4/16/2024 6:28 PMThis varies per city/county/state. As one who grew up with: Reuse Refuse Recycle - and learning about what is and is not recyclable, it has been helpful that products (and some advertisements) share that certain items (eg: pizza boxes from Domino’s) can be recycled in my county, but perhaps not in others - despite the oil left on the box. I know this could change, and it does take a lot to recycle items - also sometimes the value of what comes out of the product (to some) may not be helpful than to just trash the item. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Climate Change Impacts on HealthHow does climate change create and exacerbate health inequities?
Christopher King 4/15/2024 10:39 AMWith natural resources limited to the input and output that we use daily; all of this circles back to what we use - this is important on we conserve these natural resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Drop off an e-waste item for recycling at the sustainability Open House!Have you ever repaired a broken electronic item, rather than replacing it?
-
Christopher King 4/15/2024 10:29 AMThis has been a helpful and mindful reminder of simple tasks everyday -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Green GratitudeShare a creative way you've expressed gratitude to a colleague. How did it make you feel?
Christopher King 4/15/2024 10:28 AMWorking at an enterprise that has a <Feed> website to email these colleagues, our particular unit has a thumbtack board that allows us to share a bit of gratitude to be shared to everyone who may happen to pass it, allowing recognition to the patients/families that are cared by particular colleagues
