At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Health & Well-being
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home

Health & Well-being

Irene Kontje 4/01/2025 6:37 AMI want to change my kitchen out from plastic items to glass, wood, etc. I've already started making this switch. This is also so that I am ingesting fewer plastic particles. The problem is how many items I purchase at the grocery store that are packaged in plastic. I recycle everything but it makes me nervous as I don't trust our recycling pipeline to actually be recycling.-
Lara Pes 4/01/2025 7:12 AMThe recycling system is complicated and has many limitations. The main challenge is contamination from people who either don't care or people who wishcycle (place items in the recycling hoping for it to be recycled). Bags that have too high contamination are treated as trash. The DSNY has a more flexible system and is able to handle more contamination than what private haulers like the one we use in the WCM main campus can handle. You can find a bit more info on our website: https://sustainability.weill.cornell.edu/waste-recycling -

Plastic at the grocery store is a huge problem. I don't trust our recycling either. During this challenge I plan to find out more about my local recycling efforts.
