Food expiration dates are a "best guess" at freshness but not safety. There is not standardization on food expiration dates and is set up variably by manufacturers. This causes food waste and also green house gases which is bad for the environment. The truth is, beside baby foods and formulas, most foods are safe to consume after their expiration dates.

How I can reduce food waste at home would be to note that some foods with expiration dates can still be consumed a couple days after date. For example; bagels, bread, paturized refridgerated orange juice.
