Kellie's actions
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
In Our Communities
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
In Our Communities
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 1 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 3 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Home
Turn off Lights When I leave a Room
I will be sure to turn off lights in the house that don't need to be on when I leave a room.
At Home
Less Plastic
I will use reusable metal straws in place of plastic straws.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeDo you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?
Kellie LeGrave 4/30/2025 1:56 PMI am lucky to live in an area where water is safe and plentiful. That said, I have really strived to be mindful of how I use the water in my household and teach my children how to use water in a way that is not wasteful. For example, I have been talking to my children about taking shorter showers and turning off the water when brushing our teeth. There is so many little steps we can take each day to conserve water. -

#reflection
I have found that bringing in large reusable tote bags work wonderfully for grocery shopping. As I have been shopping for Easter, I love just bringing my tote bag along. Then, I don't feel guilty for using unnecessary plastic or paper bags. -
