Grace's actions

At Home

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

    Health & Well-being
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I noticed that my phone is constantly a draw. It is something my mind wanders to in order to solve a problem, remember something, create, and contact others. It was difficult at times to forgo my screen time. I reminded myself of the other hobbies I enjoy and spent more time reading books and crocheting. I was able to crochet my best friend's birthday present! I felt accomplished and my brain felt more active.

How could you encourage your coworkers to develop the habit of turning lights off?

I could encourage others to turn off lights by comparing our building to their home. Growing up, I always heard the comment from my mother, "Are you paying the electricity bill?" As an adult, it reminds me to think of the building I work in and the equipment I use as my responsibility. Many other places in the world do not have that luxury and it's good to remind people, kindly, that we are privileged enough to be able to have electricity as immediate as we do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work
When did you learn about recycling? Why is recycling important to you?

I learned about recycling when I was probably in middle school. I realized that a little extra effort was worth it to sort things and make sure they can be reused. The trash that accumulates has nowhere to go; we've used up so much of our Earth by piling waste on it. If I can exert a tiny bit more energy and brain power by recycling and being conscious of my decisions to impact the future of our planet, I'm gonna do it.

New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

Every day I use a French press to make my coffee. I toss those used grounds into a compost container along with plant leaves, eggshells, and other fruit waste. Once I have filled my container, I bring it to my uncle's house, and he uses it for his garden. He gives me veggies he grows in return!
