Brian's actions
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Work
Work From Home
I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
Health & Well-being
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Work
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 5 meatless meal(s) and/or vegan meal(s) each day this week.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 5 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 1 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
One Healthcare
Medical Device Reprocessing
I will spend 60 minutes learning about what medical device reprocessing is and how it works, including whether my organization has a program, and if so, which items it collects.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Brian Nelson (SSC) 4/22/2025 2:56 PMThought I'd share our internal Earth Day post here at PeaceHealth. :)
Happy Earth Day 2025, everyone!
In my role for helping to build our environmental stewardship programs here at PeaceHealth, we have been able to celebrate quite a number of successes as we work together to identify opportunities to reduce the environmental impacts from the care that we provide our communities. One question that I often get is, “There are so many ways to try to reduce our impacts on the Earth, what are some of the best things that I can do personally?”
I love this question and wanted to provide an answer as we celebrate this day each year —Earth Day vibes all year long is where it’s at. Here’re some of the most meaningful, realistic things you can do in your daily life to keep celebrating the planet:
🌱 Low-Waste Living- Carry reusables – water bottle, coffee mug, utensils, tote bag.
- Buy in bulk and avoid overly packaged items.
- Learn to compost – even small countertop systems can work wonders.
🚲 Travel Lightly- Walk, bike, or take public transit whenever possible.
- Carpool or combine errands to reduce trips.
- Consider an EV or hybrid if you’re in the market for a new ride.
🥕 Eat With Intention- Go plant-based more often – even just one or two meat-free days a week helps.
- Support local farmers and seasonal produce.
- Cut back on food waste by planning meals and using leftovers creatively.
⚡ Cut Energy Use- Unplug chargers and electronics when not in use.
- Switch to LEDs and energy-efficient appliances.
- Use smart thermostats or just be mindful of heating/cooling.
💧 Protect Water Resources- Fix leaks quickly (a dripping faucet = gallons wasted).
- Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
- Use native plants in landscaping to reduce water usage.
🌎 Support Sustainable Businesses- Buy less, choose well – quality over quantity.
- Support eco-conscious brands and local makers.
- Say no to fast fashion – thrift, swap, repair.
🌳 Get Outside + Give Back- Join a cleanup event or organize one.
- Plant a tree or native plants to support pollinators.
- Volunteer for local green orgs or donate if you can.
📚 Keep Learning + Spreading the Word- Follow environmental creators or documentaries.
- Talk about sustainability with friends—share what you’re trying.
- Vote with the planet in mind – local policies make a huge difference.
With the unfortunate passing of Pope Francis this week, the world lost one of the most ardent and vocal supporters for our care of the environment. But his influence and teachings live on, and I’d like to end this Earth Day message with words from Laudato Si’ (Praise Be To You) – the first and only encyclical written by a Pope on care for our common home.
“You are called to care for creation not only as responsible citizens but also as followers of Christ! Respect for the environment means more than simply using cleaner products or recycling what we use. These are important aspects, but not enough. We need to see, with the eyes of faith, the beauty of God’s saving plan, the link between the natural environment and the dignity of the human person”
Let us use today to reflect on our respective roles and abilities to embody the mission that Sisters of St Joseph of Peace established for us so many years ago with our charge to be responsible environmental stewards. Happy Earth Day 2025!
