Suzanne Hansen 4/15/2025 7:55 AMI leave a set of reusable bags in my car. I also leave a very small one in my purse. That one is great because I almost always have my purse with me. -
Paul Goodenough 4/15/2025 6:47 AMLove that idea Jolene!
Another idea - while the main stores I know of that encourage using cardboard shipping containers are Aldi and Costco - I would bet that any grocery store would allow you to use some containers that they would just be discarding
And then one more idea - since I compost, it isn't the end of the world if I have to take a paper bag because I can shred it and add it to the pile. Especially in late spring and summer when I don't have a lot of browns to add the pile yet, a couple extra browns help to keep the pH of the pile balanced

Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
One Healthcare

Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Home
Indoor Air Quality
I will spend 30 minutes learning about how indoor air quality impacts health and commit to taking one action to improve indoor air quality in my living space.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
In Our Communities
Support a Sharing/Reuse Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors, or purchase items second-hand to reduce resource use.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
JOLENE PEMRICK 4/01/2025 6:26 AMInow that you cannot put dirty food boxes in the recycle bin and that you should bring your plastic bags back to the store you got them from. certain boxes cannot be recycled because the have a plastic coating on them.-
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/01/2025 7:37 AMThank you, Jolene! Allina is charged a fee if a dumpster or bin of recycling is contaminated with trash, so you save money in addition to increasing recycling rates when you do this right!
