Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    In Our Communities
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items, but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? What tips do you have for others who are trying to form a habit of using reusable bags?

I leave a set of reusable bags in my car. I also leave a very small one in my purse. That one is great because I almost always have my purse with me.

      Love that idea Jolene!

Another idea - while the main stores I know of that encourage using cardboard shipping containers are Aldi and Costco - I would bet that any grocery store would allow you to use some containers that they would just be discarding

And then one more idea - since I compost, it isn't the end of the world if I have to take a paper bag because I can shred it and add it to the pile. Especially in late spring and summer when I don't have a lot of browns to add the pile yet, a couple extra browns help to keep the pH of the pile balanced

and aluminum cans have the best recycling potential - more than 90% I'm told!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    In Our Communities
What are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community? If you focused on purchasing items second-hand, did you have success? What did you learn in the process?

I can't believe I'm saying this...I'm totally being this person...but, man, cold showers rule! I use a lot less water which saves money and energy. And it really wakes me up and helps me to feel better as I start my day.

Inow that you cannot put dirty food boxes in the recycle bin and that you should bring your plastic bags back to the store you got them from. certain boxes cannot be recycled because the have a plastic coating on them.

Thank you, Jolene! Allina is charged a fee if a dumpster or bin of recycling is contaminated with trash, so you save money in addition to increasing recycling rates when you do this right!
