  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work Work From Home
What have you found to be the biggest pros and cons of working from home?

    Caroline Sandbo's avatar
    Caroline Sandbo 4/25/2024 10:39 AM
My biggest pros of working from home are gaining back the time I would spend commuting, being able to cook for myself midday, and spending time with my cat. My biggest cons are not being able to see my co-workers face-to-face and having difficulty focusing when other people are home.
I like to have a balance of in-office and at-home days!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
In Our Communities Buy From a Farmers Market
Did procuring local ingredients impact the way you think about food or the meals you decided to prepare? If so, how?

It’s hard to find many local produce items at this time of year! Today I was able to find asparagus and radishes. Now I’m thinking a lot about which of the items on my plate are being grown out of season or far away, therefore requiring more resources to grow and transport?

One Healthcare Climate Change Impacts on Health
How does climate change create and exacerbate health inequities?

    Caroline Sandbo's avatar
    Caroline Sandbo 4/09/2024 6:22 PM
Climate change creates and exacerbates health inequities by increasing our vulnerabilities to health issues. It increases our exposures, our sensitivities, and our abilities to adapt. One example of these changes in a group that is already carrying a disproportionate burden of health issues is farm workers. Climate change increases farm workers' exposure to things like wildfire smoke by creating more of it, for longer. It increases their sensitivities to health issues by increasing the amounts of pesticides and herbicides needed to grow crops, which damages the immune systems of those exposed. It decreases the ability to farm workers to adapt by decreasing the protein content of the crops themselves.
    This is only one example!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work Recycling Champion
When did you learn about recycling? Why is recycling important to you?

    Caroline Sandbo's avatar
    Caroline Sandbo 4/09/2024 3:33 PM
I have lived in recycling households my entire life. My hometown was an early adopter of municipal recycling. My parents are also quite eco-conscious, so they taught me how to properly recycle.
Now, when I move to a new area, I print out the recycling guides and keep it taped near my bins for a few weeks to learn the rules.
Recycling is important to me because there is too much trash in the world! In the same way little kids are anxious about quicksand and shark attacks, I have fears that trash dumps will overflow and spill into our cities and oceans until the whole world is full.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home Repair an Item
What was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?

Today I hemmed a pair of pants for a friend! She had received them from another friend of ours, so now these pants have passed through 3 hands to find their right fit.
I alter clothes often for myself and my friends because I have a sewing machine. I learned how to use it as a child, from my grandmother and mother and I still look up tutorials frequently! Youtube and WikiHow are my favorite resources for finding out how to repair anything. Last month I even used them to look up how to repair blinds so I could avoid buying new ones.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
In Our Communities Support a Sharing/Reuse Economy
What are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community? If you focused on purchasing items second-hand, did you have success? What did you learn in the process?

    Caroline Sandbo 4/03/2024 3:03 PM
This month I am focusing on repairing items I have, shopping secondhand, and trading skills with my community. So far I have purchased a coloring book and a puffy jacket to give as gifts to others, made a deal with a friend to hem her new jeans in exchange for her embroidering a pair of my shorts, and I plan to repair a pair of shoes I have that fell apart last week.
Often it can be more difficult to find items that you need secondhand, especially if they are unique, expensive, or urgently needed. For items that are unique or not urgently needed, I like to keep a running list on my phone of what they are and review it when I am on my way into a thrift store so I remember to look for them. Some examples of these item are a glass teapot, new curtains, and piano sheet music. For more expensive items, like furniture, I like to browse Facebook marketplace and ask around to my friends and family to see if they have any to give. For things I might need urgently, like t-shirts and kitchen items, sometimes you just have to go to a big store!
