Emily's actions
One Healthcare
One Healthcare Ecochallenge Survey
Your voice matters! Help us improve the One Healthcare Ecochallenge by taking our survey, available starting April 23rd.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 1 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
In Our Communities
Support Local Wildlife
I will take one action to support local wildlife, such as adding a food or water source, creating shelter/habitat, preventing light pollution, eliminating bird strikes, or another action.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 2 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 3 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
At Work
Work From Home
I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
One Healthcare
Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 3 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Work
2025 Pledge at Work
I pledge to take one action that improves the sustainability of my organization in 2025. It can be an action from this challenge or another action that improves resource stewardship.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Work
Go Paperless
I will avoid printing 1 pieces of paper by "going digital" and printing double-sided whenever possible.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Emily Sermersheim 4/07/2025 7:37 AMI've recently started to move away from plastic where and when I can. What an uphill battle! It's been a good challenge though. Curious... do you have any tips for moving away from plastic in your life?-

I absolutely struggle with this, too. I have carried cloth bags for shopping in my car for years, I (usually) carry a thermos/water bottle in my car so I don't have to take a disposable cup (where they allow that). I remember back when I worked in food service there was an older couple who always brought containers from home with them so we didn't have to use take away containers from our restaurant, which is a really smart idea. -
Paul Goodenough 4/07/2025 10:50 AM1. JUST SAY NO. For example, I work in an office where single-serving snacks are stocked and free for the taking. This discipline is really hard for me but today I have successfully avoided them and instead ate my delicious home-cooked chili for lunch and dipped into my home snack pack
2. SUSTAINABLE OPTION NEARER, PLASTIC FARTHER. For example, we have a set of metal kids cups/bowls/plates, and a set of plastic ones. I pushed the plastic stuff into the back of the cabinet and made sure that the metal stuff is brought to the front. Beat convenience at its own game.
3. PLASTIC OUT, SUSTAINABLE IN. As clothes and tote bags wear out and near the end of their life, I am conscious that whenever the time comes to throw them away, I will replace them with a more sustainable option
4. EAT HOME COOKED. Alluded to this above, but building a repertoire of yummy meals that are simple, cheap, and easy to cook are also, unsurprisingly, healthier. And all those things lead to a virtuous cycle.
