Julie's actions
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
At Work
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 4 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Julie Sills 4/14/2024 10:21 AMI have looked for a way to recycle the plastic lined bags that coffee comes in. According to some guidelines, they're not recyclable, since they contain metal which is hard to separate. That's disappointing.-
Candice Miller 4/15/2024 2:37 PMIt is a bummer, Juile, but don't get discouraged. Many things that were not recyclable before now are so there is hope. And, I find that when I learn about packaging that is not recyclable, I find myself looking for alternative products that have 'green' packaging and even found a few items that I like better than what I had been purchasing in the past.
