I connect with nature by watching and talking to the birds that are around my property. This little guy thought it might be a good idea to build his nest on my front door. Movement of the door frightened him away.

My daughter insisted we move it to the other door 2-feet away that isn't opened multiple times a day. Little bird never came back. It's not a real steady place to raise babies anyway. It was fun to see him sitting there though.

That's so delightful!! Use the back door from now on, I guess?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Well-being
What is one way you would like to improve your communication skills? Why is constructive communication important at work and at home?

Avoid showing my disapproval when my kids are telling me about what they are doing that I am not fond of... they are adults and must be responsible for their own lives.
Good communication helps lead to more peaceful conversation and fewer hard feelings after the fact.

Very well said! I need to focus on this as sometimes I don’t agree with my daughter’s choices and beliefs.

What is my biggest challenge with the daily activities? Finding one new fact about my community on a daily basis.

Switching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What other actions do you take to be more energy efficient at home?

Run the dishwasher only when it is full. Use the cold-water cycle for most of my laundry. Keep the thermostat at a cooler temperature and use clothing for heat. Eat my leftovers before they spoil.

Why is it important to consider how and to whom you donate your no-longer-needed items?

    Shawna Stonum's avatar
    Shawna Stonum 4/15/2025 6:57 AM
It is important to me that the items I donate don't end up in the landfill but also go to someone who can use the items and can't afford to buy new stuff. I typically choose organizations that are helping people find their way in society free of whatever is holding them back.

Thank you for those recommendations. I use Ridwell, and they have specific campaigns like collecting lightly used toiletries and jewelry to donate them to Domestic Abuse Victims' organizations.

Athleta has 'take back bags' for free. Fill them with gently used athletic clothing and ship it . Any size, and brand and they make sure the items move on to another person or disposed of responsibility. I've sent back my kids past season team jerseys, leggings that didn't quite work out, unwanted race day t-shirts and warm up jackets with broken zippers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I've been reading about plants and birds native to this area with the intent to incorporate native species into my front yard and attract local birds. Hoping I can follow through with this project this spring/summer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Why is it important to express ourselves? How did you feel before and after your creative activity?

Making signs for a rally. I feel empowered even though I won't be able to stand and walk for the rally.
Art is a healthy release and can be cathartic for those who are emotionally in pain.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home
What was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?

A quilt my son acquired from my mother's things had opened on one end. I added more batting and sewed it up; then told my son to be gentle with it as it is old and frail. :)
