DONNA's actions
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 6 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
In Our Communities
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 10 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 5 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 2 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
In Our Communities
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 10 items.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
In Our Communities
Support a Sharing/Reuse Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors, or purchase items second-hand to reduce resource use.
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
At Work
Quality Improvement
I commit to dedicating 240 minutes to exploring my organization's quality improvement resources and examining how quality improvement methodologies can support sustainability projects.

We were on Spring Break vacation and stuck to goals regarding recyclables. We brought them back and was to find a recycling drop off to place all our items for the week. I was proud of my family for helping with this!-
Paul Goodenough 4/16/2025 6:52 AMI really appreciate your commitment! We actually did the same thing on a getaway we took to Kentucky. This instills those good habits in our kids, too (I hope).

As a family we have always been about reusing, recycling, and composting volunteering in our community. This challenge just helps to see others feel the same way.-
Paul Goodenough 4/09/2025 8:28 AMBill McKibben says: "The most important thing an individual can do to be more sustainable is to be less of an individual." I too love the Ecochallenge and experiencing the community of people who believe in a better way and a better future. And what better place to start these changes than at home! Have a great Earth Month.

Paul Goodenough 4/09/2025 8:38 AMMy personal motto as a chaplain is "creation care is patient care." Doing right by the environment isn't just for public health...it really just is the right thing to do. -

It is great to have your family involved. I think it is easier to form good habits when everyone is working toward the same goals.
