Rhonda's actions

At Home

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

At Work

Turn It Off

I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

At Work

Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!

Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

At Home

Brush My Teeth Without Water Running

I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

One Healthcare

Greening the OR

I will spend 5 minutes learning about some of the ways my organization makes its operating rooms more sustainable and ways we can improve.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

One Healthcare

Medical Device Reprocessing

I will spend 30 minutes learning about what medical device reprocessing is and how it works, including whether my organization has a program, and if so, which items it collects.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health & Well-being

Do Nature Activities

I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 020 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

In Our Communities

Support Local Wildlife

I will take one action to support local wildlife, such as adding a food or water source, creating shelter/habitat, preventing light pollution, eliminating bird strikes, or another action.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I am very delighted that IU Health has removed all styrofoam products from food service facilities across the system! It feels like a big step in the right direction...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare
Did you learn anything that surprised you about the environmental impact of operating rooms? What are some barriers to greening ORs, and how can departments work together to help overcome these barriers?

I would love to work with other departments to begin a recycling program in the OR! We toss lots of #1 plastics every day in multiple rooms. And if we could figure out a way to collect cardboard boxes it would really make an impact! Can you imagine how much is thrown out across all of IU Health?
