If you live in NYC, you have one of the best recycling chances than in most other municipalities in the US. The city separates trash from recycling (different trucks pick them up, unless, in some cases, they use one truck that has 2 different compartments). Their sorting facility is pretty advanced but, compared to other countries such as Europe, US recycling is still limited. Part is due to limitation is the sorting facilities and lack of incentives for recycling it. Recycling is unfortunately a business. If there is not a profitable market for a specific material, no one is incentivized to recycle it. We are having issues with plastic #5, which we generate a lot of, because it's too expensive to recycle and no one wants to take it from us, unless we pay, and it is frustrating. The city could actually recycle it but since it comes mainly from labs and not households, they cannot take it.
