Kelsey's actions
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health & Well-being
Learn About Constructive Communication
I will spend 15 minute(s) learning about constructive communication.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 3 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
Health & Well-being
Go Get a Check Up
I will make 1 appointments to support my health and well-being (primary care provider, dental, vision, etc.)
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
At Work
Go Paperless
I will avoid printing 5 pieces of paper by "going digital" and printing double-sided whenever possible.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
One Healthcare
Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 2 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
At Home
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kelsey Zielke 4/30/2024 6:42 PMThe start of the month came with some life curveballs. I’m glad I was able to finish the month more deliberately than it started. I think I’ve made some positive changes that I can keep up. I’m looking forward to next year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Go PaperlessHave you considered doing a review of your work practices to see if there are opportunities to go digital with a process that has historically been paper-based at your organization?
Kelsey Zielke 4/30/2024 6:34 PMI tend to print things out. I like the physical act of writing. I’m trying to be more mindful of what benefit I am getting from having something printed out versus using technology to minimize my need to print. Writing on a tablet is helping me get better at not printing documents and articles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Repair an ItemWhat was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?
Kelsey Zielke 4/24/2024 2:30 PMI used YouTube to find tutorials to repair clothing. I have reattached buttons that came off of a favorite sweater and fixed rips in my jeans. I'm happy to have a favorite sweater back. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Use Reusables at WorkWhile one's plastic cutlery is a seemingly very small part of someone's "plastic impact", why do you think it's important for us to address this opportunity to reduce?
Kelsey Zielke 4/22/2024 6:52 AMEach plastic utensil adds up over time to a huge amount of plastic waste. If I eat at work 5 days a week, that's 5-10 pieces of plastic wasted every week. I can keep a set of metal utensils with me and over time reduce my impact in ways that add up.
