No I don't. We wait until the low temperature has been in the 50s for at least a week for the pollinators to come out of hibernation, but the main goal of "no mow May" is to provide flowers/food for pollinators. I have 2 pollinator gardens already and received the Lawns to Legumes grant so I will be turning half of my front yard into a native pollinator garden in the next month. We have not had warm enough overnight lows yet so we still have not mowed and have dandelions as a food source for now since my other pollinator species are not blooming yet.

I plan to take this mantra with me as I exit this challenge and begin to embark on an even longer journey.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
One Healthcare Climate Change Impacts on Health
How does climate change create and exacerbate health inequities?

    Candice Miller's avatar
    Candice Miller 4/30/2024 9:00 PM
Yes, of course. Climate change seems to impact less fortunate areas harder. It's tougher to bounce back when the cost is high and the resources are limited.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
In Our Communities Support a Sharing/Reuse Economy
What are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community? If you focused on purchasing items second-hand, did you have success? What did you learn in the process?

Ignorance. Being stuck in your ways.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare Network for Change
What are the benefits of connecting with new colleagues? How have you fostered meaningful connections with others?

We learn from each other. We learn new perspectives and new approaches. Why stay stuck in your ways when a new way to do something may be better, be more efficient, be more effective. I hope I can find a way to connect with other challenge participants after the challenge wraps.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Home Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
Was it easy or difficult to sign up for renewable energy in your area? Did you learn anything that surprised you while making this transition?

Actually, I got a flyer in the mail. I had a bunch of questions in order to pick the best option for me.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
In Our Communities Volunteer in My Community
How did volunteering in your community make you feel? What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

    Candice Miller 4/30/2024 8:54 PM
It feels good to volunteer and give back to the community. I am happy to be a part of that and look forward to volunteering beyond this challenge.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
In Our Communities Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

    Candice Miller's avatar
    Candice Miller 4/30/2024 8:52 PM
    Environmental affects on human health:
    • heatwaves - overloading weak hearts and lungs; obesity & diabetes cause an inability to adapt to sudden heat changes; all this can contribute to heat stroke and even death
    • poor air quality - from air pollution: causing asthma, cardiovascular disease; from increasing allergens: causing respiratory inflammation, illness and allergies
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Candice Miller's avatar
    Candice Miller 4/30/2024 8:42 PM
When I am not sure, I like to follow the How2Recycle guidelines.
    Accepted: clean & dry recyclables
    • with the various chasing arrows symbols
    • cardboard and paper products
    • aluminum and glass containers
Store-drop off: looks for the How2Recycle: Store Drop-off symbol
    • plastic grocery bags
    • bulk plastic bag wraps
    • plastic bubble wrap & mailers
    Ship to certain places:
    • various terracycle programs (Burt's Bees, Late July...)
    • clean undergarments/socks (turned into things like carpeting)
    Not recyclable:
    • styrofoam
    • small plastic lids
    • medicine bottles (Rx & OTC)
    • food waste
    • plastic utensils and straws
    • any recyclables with food or drink residue
The hardest part for me is trying to understand why manufacturers continue to package goods in single-use plastic and non-recyclable materials, when so much progress has been made to create 'green' alternatives. We'll get there...one day.
