I cleaned out our refrigerator and freezer yesterday and composted all the old food and recycled the numerous bottles of various condiments and items that were outdated. Contrary to my spouse's opinion, I do think fish sauce expires. The odor is already a little potent and the two years past expiration did not improve the smell.

It's funny how my fridge always seems to multiply condiments. And yes, I think everything expires. We don't have 2 years past expiration/use by dates right now, since we just moved last year. But I did clear out some of our old spices.

As I grow older, I am not someone that runs to a provider for every little ache and pain. However, I do have to say that the new urgent care/Zoom Care ("doc in a box") model meets the lower acuity needs super well in a timely and less financial burden approach. My nephew from Australia is staying with us so we paid for our Zoom Care visit out of pocket and they even had the medications he needed and total it was $100! This was so much less expensive than having to go to a big urgent care and especially the ED. We were also able to book our appointment online and get in and out of there in under 30 minutes. What a great model for those non-emergent needs!

I have really enjoyed the check-ins for personal accountability and also to see what others are posting. Thank you all for your diligence in helping care for our planet!

I enjoy turning lights off in my work area and using a direct light onto my work space. Sometimes the overhead lights are so powerful and are just too much on my eyes and it also saves electricity!

I think every tip is great! I nag So about running water before it gets hot. I wash my face in cold water... Anyhow, I'm buying him a bucket to collect water!

      Some tips:
      • Collecting water from the shower while it is getting hot to water plants
      • If it is yellow, let it mellow; if it is brown, flush it down (toilet water management)
      • Watch Captain Planet--I have never heard of that movie!
      • Put a brick in your toilet to reduce the amount of water needed to fill the tank (WHAT?!?)
      • I LOVE the laundry sheets--so much less plastic waste!
      • Sharing herbs from garden to others (I brought in some of my prolific mint for others this week)
      • I will think on some of the other tips...

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
At Home Practice the 5 r's
Which of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?

    Zoe Anastas (SWMC)'s avatar
Zoe Anastas (SWMC) 4/23/2024 10:59 AM
I think recycling is probably the easiest as we have a service that picks-up most items and then Ridwell which picks-up styrofoam, caps, clamshells, threads, and other harder to recycle items. I try really hard to re-use items as much as possible. My family laughs at my re-using of ziploc bags but if they were used for most things, they are easy to rinse out and re-use!

What was the last item you repaired? How did you do it and what was the outcome? What are your favorite resources for learning how to repair items yourself?

I like to repair my dog's toys. He is quite voracious in his play and his toys end up with holes in them for stuffing to escape or he will tear off an arm, etc. Instead of always buying new toys, I will continue to repair them until they are too eviscerated to repair. It is also a nice brain diversion to bring a bag of sewing projects with me to soccer games or when I was sitting with an ill family member.
The attached picture is of my dog and the bounty of toys that I recently repaired; he is so excited :-)

Farmers markets are great for lots of reasons--supporting the growers of items directly, eating foods that are in season and also less packaging waste as compared to hospital fruit and vegetable purchases!

And it gets you out of your house and moving, and getting to see neighbors or community members. Another win. When I lived in Europe this was my almost daily trek across town to the targ (open air market) for food. I do miss that way of life.
