Jeffrey's actions
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 10 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
Health & Well-being
Healthy Hydration
I will improve hydration by drinking an additional 16oz of water each day. I will do this by drinking additional servings of water or by drinking water in place of other less healthy beverage options.
Health & Well-being
Whole Foods
I will enjoy 3 meals each week free of processed foods.
One Healthcare
Use a reusable bottle/mug
I will keep countless disposable cups and/or bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jeffrey Avansino 4/30/2024 9:38 PMIt was a fun month. Look forward to doing it again next year -
Jeffrey Avansino 4/26/2024 11:30 PMIt is going well so far. I wish I had more time to spend learning about how we can have impact. I have thought of some ideas I hope to share with my environmentally conscious colleagues and friends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Healthy HydrationHow do you plan to increase your water intake during the day?
Jeffrey Avansino 4/26/2024 11:29 PMI am trying to drink more and more water. I find that most of the time I am just not thirsty so I do not force it. I do take in a lot of liquid through smoothies and tea.-
Zoe Anastas (SWMC) 4/28/2024 11:37 AMI like using a quart size glass mason jar and aim to drink at least two of those per day of just water. As we get older, our thirst response lessons so it is easier to become dehydrated. Your kidneys love just plain ol' water to help flush them out.

Jeffrey Avansino 4/17/2024 10:13 PMOne thing I would recommend to people to look into Ridwell. It is a great way to recycle more. -
Jeffrey Avansino 4/13/2024 9:37 AMThis is my third year doing the challenge. I love it cause it gives me a focused month to be very mindful of the environment and my impact. Also I picked my challenges as something new to focus on and feasible to attain. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Jeffrey Avansino 4/12/2024 6:41 PMBy thinking creatively, we can come up with ways to do more with less or think about how we can re-use items.-
James Howard (SW) 4/12/2024 9:57 PMI think by letting ourselves be creative we find paths we would not take or consider otherwise.

Jeffrey Avansino 4/12/2024 6:35 PMHave been on vacation so lots of time to reflect on the environment and our impact as humans. If everyone did one little thing to make the environment better, we would be able to achieve a lot.-
Barbara Hamilton 4/12/2024 9:14 PMThat is so true, Jeffrey. And this EcoChallenge helps us to quantify the collective impact of individual actions. Pretty cool.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Recycling ChampionWhen did you learn about recycling? Why is recycling important to you?
Jeffrey Avansino 4/11/2024 6:56 AMIt has been a long time since I was aware of recycling. When I was a kid, my grandmother use to have us look around in garbage bins to find cans to recycle. We would get paid by the can that allowed us to make money. That was my first introduction to recycling.
Re-using items is key to sustainability. Putting items into landfill or the ocean when it can be used again is obviously bad for the environment and the long term sustainability of our planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Adjust the ThermostatWhat other steps can you take each day to heat and cool your home more efficiently?
Jeffrey Avansino 4/10/2024 6:25 PMOpen the windows at night and close them during the day in the summer to cool your house. Also in the winter we wear warmer clothes around the house so we do not have to have the heat so high -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Learn the Truth about Expiration DatesWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Jeffrey Avansino 4/09/2024 5:05 PMOne of the ways we can reduce food waste is buying what you need. I learned that we waste 30-40 percent of food. I found the tables with expiration times to be very helpful. Personally I eat lots of leftovers.-
Candice Miller 4/09/2024 5:58 PMNeeds vs. Wants mentality. So true, Jeffrey! I also enjoy leftovers; however, when it’s an item that I would not enjoy leftover (a rarity, lol), I just buy & cook less. If I cook a lot, I like to share with family, friends & even neighbors. Everybody wins!
