Planting trees is not only therapeutic for your mental health but good for your physical as well. Trees are great at turning CO2 back into O2 thus giving us cleaner air to breathe in.

I am proud that I committed myself every day for 30 days, educated myself, had fun and have created new habits that will benefit myself, my community and the planet. Reading the feed daily and then seeing the impact everyone has made makes me happy that I was involved and I'm looking forward to next year's challenge.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare
Did you learn anything that surprised you about the environmental impact of operating rooms? What are some barriers to greening ORs, and how can departments work together to help overcome these barriers?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/29/2025 3:52 AM
    • Greening the Labs Champion 🥼
The operating room is one of the main energy consumers and waste producers in the healthcare industry, accounting for about 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. One way to potentially "green the OR" is having surgical teams use fewer supplies or alternative supplies of a specific item to reduce waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare
What surprised you most about the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health? What is one action you can take to make a positive impact?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/29/2025 3:48 AM
    • Greening the Labs Champion 🥼
I learned that healthcare accounts for 5% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. One action I can take is by being less wasteful of supplies such as using just one pipette for the same sample rather than multiple. Less plastic being wasted.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    One Healthcare
Reprocessing single use devices reduces the amount of regulated medical waste. What are other ways healthcare facilities can reduce regulated medical waste?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/27/2025 10:48 PM
    • Greening the Labs Champion 🥼
Healthcare facilities can reduce regulated medical waste by proper segregation of waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What is one action your organization can take to make its laboratories greener? How can you assist in this effort?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/27/2025 10:00 PM
    • Greening the Labs Champion 🥼
My lab here tries to be greener by properly recycling our waste. We have separate bins for paper to be shredded, biohazards, boxes, glass, and metal containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

Pollen levels are amongst the highest in Oregon and SW Washington in comparison to other regions in the United States. Myself and many other suffer from allergies that can lead to congestion, fatigue, sore throat, and itchy or dry eyes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    At Work
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/25/2025 9:43 PM

I learned that my county has an entire website of what can be recycled here: https://clark.wa.gov/public-health/recycling-z
Theres even an app called Recycle Right where you can
    • View, download, and print your collection schedule
    • Sign up for email, phone, or in-app reminders and alerts
    • Look up local reuse, recycling, and disposal options for specific items in the A–Z Directory
    • Request collection of bulky items, electronic waste, and more

There's a surprising amount of stuff that my city doesn't recycle - I am happy that the local stores have started to get recycling bins for customer use which really helps!

    • Susan Bevel-Dufresne's avatar
      Susan Bevel-Dufresne 4/26/2025 5:54 AM
Thanks for that information. Every city is different as far as what can be recycled and some cities have better education programs which in turn increases participation. Also bigger more urban cities vs smaller more rural cities recycling programs may be different due to funding and variations in markets. If every city was involved, educated and had the funding, it would be game changer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How do sustainability and quality overlap? How can quality improvement methods help your organization sustain its sustainability initiatives?

    Cori Dougher (SW)'s avatar
Cori Dougher (SW) 4/25/2025 9:38 PM
    • Greening the Labs Champion 🥼
Quality is the ability to satisfy requirements, while sustainability is the ability to continue to do so over time. Quality management systems help companies understand the relationship between quality and sustainability by measuring performance against specific standards.

Nice distinction. We can pull that into our personal lives as well- buying higher quality clothing (for example) means that it is likely more sustainable (longer-lasting), but we can also look to their creation processes for sustainability- how do they source their fibers? how do they dye fabric? And then there are the other issues about where this happens and how they pay their employees...

My community hosted a Sustainability Film Series, and I attended the final documentary in the series last night. The documentary was called Bad River and tells the powerful story of the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band and their ongoing fight for tribal sovereignty, particularly in relation to a controversial pipeline running through their reservation and near Lake Superior. It was very inspiring and worth a watch if you have the opportunity. https://www.badriverfilm.com/

Here in Milwaukee, WI there's an organization called Milwaukee Riverkeeper that does an annual clean-up of local waterways and trails, so I'll be celebrating Earth Day tomorrow by joining the cleaning crew! Nothing better than getting out on a lovely spring morning and enjoying this beautiful Earth we all share!
