    At Home
Do you compost at home through a pick-up service? Any companies you'd recommend?

This last year I purchased a composter that I can use. We tried to compost open in the yard but it attracted some unwanted animals. I would love to get compost picked up but the two challenges are 1) I don't think they pick up where I live and 2) I like the idea of using the compost in our gardens!

I'm really excited that the outdoor farmer's market starts for the season this upcoming weekend! It feels really nice to buy directly from farmers and be outside for a bit!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I use this website if I have questions about what can be recycled and what cannot: https://www.ecomaine.org/what-can-be-recycled/recyclopedia/. I also have a list of common items on my refrigerator and that helps. Finally, I try to donate items that can be reused.

Contamination is challenging and anxiety inducing because I don't want to cause problems for the recycling facility. I think the more we learn, the better we can do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items, but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? What tips do you have for others who are trying to form a habit of using reusable bags?

One of my biggest barriers to bringing a bag is making sure it's in my car. A good habit to start is after you bring your groceries in, hang the bags on your front door to bring them to your car next time you leave. Even better, you could just walk them out to your car right away!

Yes! This is the habit I am trying to get my husband into. I always hang them on the garage door handle so they are physically in the way and you take them out the next time you go into the garage. He currently places them on the bench and then they sit there for a few days to a week.

Thank you for the reminder and action, I got the recyclable bags but forgot so I am going to use your suggestion.
