Catherine's actions
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Home
less bulk buying
Only purchase the amount of food that will be consumed
At Home
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending food waste to the landfill by composting my food scraps.
One Healthcare
Creative Solutions
I will share one idea for making my organization more sustainable on our team's feed.
At Work
create electronic journal of sustainability actions
I forget to electronically journal and grab whatever paper is at hand - same with taking messages or talking to coworkers and keeping notes
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Work
Stay Connected
I will schedule coffee breaks, lunches, and/or check-in meetings with 5 coworkers to promote connectivity in my workplace.
At Home
Shorter Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
At Work
Work From Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Learn the Truth about Expiration DatesWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Catherine Lyons 4/23/2024 11:59 AMFreeze meat before use by date and eggs will stay good in the coldest part of the fridge for 3-5 weeks following purchase -
Catherine Lyons 4/16/2024 5:35 PMMore shopping at Trader Joe's and less shopping at Costco (too much goes to waste when shopping for just 1 or 2 if shopping at Costco)-
Sara Menvielle 4/17/2024 2:39 AMLike the other comment says, I also try splitting food items with my family if we get something at Costco. Or, depending on what food item it is, I will individually freeze them so i can use them at a later time!
But going to Trader Joe’s is so fun. I also love Sprouts (which we don’t have in Ohio but I went to all the time when I was in San Diego). Their sandwiches they make from the deli are so good! -
Candice Miller 4/16/2024 6:51 PMI hear ya, Catherine. I can’t stand to see things go to waste either. I ran into something similar so now I shop at Costco and split the food items with my sister, my brother, or my best friend, depending on what was bought.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Practice the 5 r'sWhich of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?
Catherine Lyons 4/16/2024 5:07 PMRefuse is a good one for me - I am going to refuse to buy too much food and only purchase what is on my list for preparing meals. More fresh vegetables and fruit
