Melissa's actions
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health & Well-being
Go Get a Check Up
I will make 1 appointments to support my health and well-being (primary care provider, dental, vision, etc.)
One Healthcare
Sustainable Healthcare
I will attend or watch a recording of a webinar 1 minutes long covering one or more healthcare sustainability issues.
Health & Well-being
Taking Steps to Promote Well-being
I will increase my step count by 100 each day and will take breaks from sitting by briefly getting up and moving once per hour during the day.
In Our Communities
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 1 piece(s) of litter each day.
Health & Well-being
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 10 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Interesting diagram from the University of Berkeley. Carbon Footprint - Dining (berkeley.edu)-
Zoe Anastas (SWMC) 4/30/2024 12:04 PMThat is so interesting as I knew that beef was high but I guess I didn't think about cheese being high as well. I adore cheese but it makes me think twice about making sure it doesn't spoil as it is such a large carbon footprint. Probably because you need cows or goats to make cheese :-0. Quite a realization--thank you for sharing -

Melissa Ondricek 4/29/2024 6:33 AMWhat steps are you taking to reduce your carbon footprint? My largest impact is being childfree. I do several of these other actions as well since it all adds up!

Melissa Ondricek 4/26/2024 11:42 AMHave you thought about a better, more green way to fertilize your yard? Everything you place on/in your yard ends up in the water ways so why not lessen your impact? My husband and I have just started using the company Sunday based in CO. I don't want to spread anything I wouldn't place in a cup and drink because. big picture, that's exactly what you are doing. Here is a link for more information on this fertilizer created with items that can be found in your kitchen! Ultimate Weeding Kit | Sunday Lawn Care (getsunday.com)-

Melissa Ondricek 4/25/2024 7:33 AMA great way to reduce food waste is to compost, but not all items can be composted in your backyard like meat and bones. This is where your local organics drop off comes into play. This includes being able to compost those greasy pizza boxes that can't be recycled. Check your local city and/or county to find a program near you. I live in Dakota county so here is our example of what to look for. :) Organics & Food Waste at Home| Dakota County-
Suzanne Hansen 4/29/2024 3:15 PMI took some things that needed to get out of my frig to the organics drop site at Thompson Park in Dakota County yesterday. My dog loves when I do this because I take him on a walk at the park too!

Melissa Ondricek 4/24/2024 8:30 AMDo you know why plastic bags are not to be placed in your curbside recycling bin? They get tangled in the machinery and cause damage. What you can do with your bag of bags and other recyclable soft plastic is find a local drop off site to ensure they get recycled appropriately. More information Video: Why Plastic Bags Can't Go With the Regular Recycling - Earth911-
Amy Smith 4/27/2024 6:07 PMI did not know that about plastic bags thanks for sharing -
Melissa Ondricek 4/26/2024 11:54 AMJoyce that is great! I am still trying to get recycle bins for the new Allina Lakeville clinic. I feel horrible with all of the plastic and pop cans that are being thrown away instead of recycled. -
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/26/2024 8:30 AMThis is why hospitals are transitioning to bagless recycling programs when it is possible. Hennepin County Medical Center has done this successfully already, kudos to them! -
Sara Menvielle 4/24/2024 10:14 AMSo interesting! I didn’t know the actual reason plastic bags couldn’t be recycled normally. Just that they couldn’t. Thanks for sharing this! -
Anita Jordan 4/24/2024 8:33 AMThanks for the tip I have often wonder this myself.

Melissa Ondricek 4/23/2024 9:14 AMI joined this challenge to help spread information. You don't know what you don't know. Coming from a career in conservation and preservation I have had exposure to a variety of information most others have not. One example is I worked with endangered Amur Tigers for 8 years as the primary Tiger keeper. Did you know that you can help tiger populations based on what kind of candy you purchase? Look for brands that use sustainably sourced palm oil. Check out more information about which kind of candy to buy and an app you can download. PalmOil Scan Mobile App - CMZoo -
Melissa Ondricek 4/23/2024 6:19 AMDid you know that compostable cutlery exists? I wish all fast food restaurants and Healthcare facilities would provide this cutlery to cut down on plastic waste. Compostable Cutlery (greenpaperproducts.com)-
Melissa Ondricek 4/30/2024 8:05 AMSuzanne that's great! Now it needs to spread throughout the rest of the company. I would love to see the Styrofoam containers switched out to biodegradable/compostable containers too. -
Suzanne Hansen 4/29/2024 3:17 PMWe have it at the Commons!
