Vic Roers 4/30/2024 6:39 AMWhere did the month of April go? It has been very inspiring to read everyone's posts this month and feel a sense of solidarity with all that have participated in this challenge. Thank you! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Practice the 5 r'sWhich of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?
Vic Roers 4/25/2024 7:47 AMReducing is the easiest for me. I had a some difficulty with throwing recycling away in Arizona because there is no recycling offered in the county where I was staying. It really was unsettling to me - especially because I was helping someone reduce paperwork and other things in their home.-
Joyce Fitzgerald 4/26/2024 8:28 AMYes, this is disquieting! It is difficult for individuals to make a difference with out good sustainability policies, programs and funding in place.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Learn the Truth about Expiration DatesWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Vic Roers 4/22/2024 5:05 AMI reduce food waste by only buying what I believe I can realistically consume before it goes bad, when it comes to fresh foods. I reduce food waste by composting any items that I am not able to fully consume. I also promote composting and food waste reduction for large-scale events that I coordinate.-
Margaret Marsalka 4/22/2024 5:39 AMI would love to start composting. My mom composted for her garden through our whole childhood. I don't know if I have a big enough yard to allot space for it, but I've seen Rustbelt Riders picking up compost buckets in our area. Maybe an option to try!

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Switch to Cold WaterHow else can you reduce the environmental footprint of clothing and textiles?
Vic Roers 4/22/2024 4:59 AMLiving sustainably means buying less. It is possible to purchase clothing from sustainable brands. We can reduce the impact of clothing on the environment by how we clean it, too. Using soaps that are more pure or choosing to handwash our clothing, instead of using electrical energy and unnecessary amounts of water to do so. I travel to remote areas where using a washboard is the way of life, and I prefer handwashing, when possible. I also buy many garments second-hand and I give my clothing away on the neighborhood "Buy Nothing" page. -
Vic Roers 4/21/2024 5:08 PMHappy Earth Day, everyone! I'm enjoying the challenge and today I applied for a grant to replace nine trees that were cut down due to Emerald Ash Borer. It feels gratifying to contribute toward reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Work From HomeWhat have you found to be the biggest pros and cons of working from home?
Vic Roers 4/20/2024 4:44 PMPro: I am in a controlled environment. I have sensitivities to sound, so the white noise system and the loud HVAC system at the system office can be hard on my senses. Another pro is saving $ from less gas use and parking.
Con: Less connectivity with team members.-
Sara Menvielle 4/21/2024 12:49 PMI’m not able to work from home but I often think about if I could work from home the biggest pro would be no fluorescent lights! 😀 -
Zoe Anastas (SWMC) 4/21/2024 6:57 AMNice! And maybe another pro is that you can make your lunch in your own kitchen, or, could that be a negative if you like the food in your cafeteria :-) -
James Howard (SW) 4/20/2024 6:43 PMGlad you have the opportunity to work from home. Nice to only have to "commute"to the kitchen. lol

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Shorter ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Vic Roers 4/20/2024 4:41 PMI spend time annually in countries where water quality is a real concern due to sewage, bacteria, pollutants, etc. There we must take extra care to use purified water to wash our fruits and vegetables before consuming and we need to purchase filters for the faucets. One way to reduce harmful products from going into the street drains is to find an alternative to using salt in the winter to de-ice sidewalks and roads.-
Jeff Babic 4/21/2024 10:35 AMGood points, Vic. Makes me appreciate what we have.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Brush My Teeth Without Water RunningDo you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?
Vic Roers 4/20/2024 4:35 PMMy area is water secure. I hand wash dishes instead of using the dishwasher. I have a brick in my toilet tank so that it takes less water to fill the tank for flushing.-
James Howard (SW) 4/20/2024 6:44 PMSounds like you have some great water saving practices. Keep up the food work.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch? How did you feel after spending time outdoors?
Vic Roers 4/20/2024 4:33 PMI feel rejuvenated after spending time outdoors. The air has been crisp today, but it is fresh. Many birds are getting their nests ready in my neighborhood.
-
Lynne Moore (SSC Revenue cycle ) 4/21/2024 8:57 AMWe have nesting finches, crows, and hummers at least on our property. We also have mason bees working hard to fill their nesting tubes, 11. Bee hives, and 9 crazily laying chickens. We are slowly removing grass and making the entire yard for food and forage for humans and pollinators. It makes us all happy!

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Diverse and Locally-Owned BusinessesWhat did you enjoy most about shopping at a diverse and/or locally-owned business? What are some of your favorite diverse and/or locally-owned businesses to shop at in your area?
Vic Roers 4/19/2024 5:42 AMI like having the opportunity to practice my limited Spanish when ordering at my favorite restaurant in the Midtown Global Market. Manny's Tortas is one of the best restaurants in Minneapolis. The pork loin (lomo de puerco) torta is delicious. Que rico!!
