Neil Yeager 4/30/2025 7:31 AM- Foodie 🍱
I certainly have underestimated the work required to dig up a hole in my life. :)
I have planted many trees over the 15 years I have lived on my property, and its quite pleasant to see them grow to great heights knowing you nurtured that from a little sapling. Quite rewarding to sit in the shade of trees you have planted. Quite rewarding to think of the people who will sit in the shade of trees planted that I will not be around to sit in their shade as well. :) -

Health & Well-being
Healthy Sleep
I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
In Our Communities
Use Reusable Bags
I will refuse 3 of single-use paper or plastic bags each day by bringing my own reusable bags or carrying purchased goods another way.
Health & Well-being
Taking Steps to Promote Well-being
I will increase my step count by 1000 each day and will take breaks from sitting by briefly getting up and moving once per hour during the day.
One Healthcare
Use A Reusable Mug/Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable cup(s) and/or bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle, cup, or mug.
Health & Well-being
Healthy Hydration
I will improve hydration by drinking an additional 8oz of water each day. I will do this by drinking additional servings of water or by drinking water in place of other less healthy beverage options.
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 100 items.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
Health & Well-being
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
In Our Communities
Plant Trees
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard. Check out resources for which tree species are best to plant in your area.
Health & Well-being
Go Get a Check Up
I will make 4 appointments to support my health and well-being (primary care provider, dental, vision, etc.)
At Work
Work From Home
I will work from home 5 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
In Our Communities
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 1 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Home
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than running a full dishwasher. To save water, I will scrape instead of rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher, and only run it when it is full.
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 6 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Crystal Shnitser 4/30/2025 7:13 AMPlanting trees is so peaceful, and you are outside with nature and it's so calming. These are both good for your mental and spiritual health. Planting a tree is good for your physical health because you are using muscles you don't normally use to dig a hole. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingHow do you practice self care? Why is it important?
Crystal Shnitser 4/30/2025 7:11 AMI should practice self-care more but at least once a month I try to go get a full body massage bc otherwise I get headaches from tightness in my neck and shoulders. It's important because everyone needs time for themselves to do things they like or just to relax.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingWhat creative ways did you find to add daily steps to your routine? How did you feel after increasing your daily step count?
Crystal Shnitser 4/30/2025 3:16 AMNow that the weather is nice, I take my kids to the park and they can play on the playground while I walk on the trail that goes around the playground or sometimes, they choose to walk with me. I also have a walking pad under my desk, so I try to get some steps in while I am working. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items, but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? What tips do you have for others who are trying to form a habit of using reusable bags?
Crystal Shnitser 4/30/2025 3:14 AMWhen the reusable bag started, I forgot them at home or in the car all the time, so I started keeping a fold up one (it folds up smaller than a 3x3 sticky note pad) in my purse until I got in the habit of it. Now I always remember to bring bags. If you don't have a bag you can always use an empty box from the store to carry your items in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeDo you live in an area that is water secure or with water scarcity? What other actions do you take to use water more efficiently?
Crystal Shnitser 4/30/2025 3:11 AMWater scarcity, we need more rain. We have all energy and water efficient appliances, and we use rain barrels to collect water and water our gardens. As my faucet water is running to get warm/hot I put that running water into the Brita filter so it's not wasted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-beingConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Crystal Shnitser 4/29/2025 3:12 AMI get anywhere from 6-8 hours of sleep. I tend to fall asleep while putting my children to bed. I wake up early so going to bed later would only be worse for me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWas this action easy to add to your daily routine? Why or why not?
Crystal Shnitser 4/29/2025 3:09 AMYes, it is easy to do. As I am getting up from the computer at the end of the day the monitors go off. As with most things in my house if it's not being used it is turned off. We also try to unplug things that we aren't using.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our CommunitiesHow did volunteering in your community make you feel? What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Crystal Shnitser 4/28/2025 3:05 AMOver the weekend my kids, husband and I volunteered to clean up litter in our downtown area for an Earth Day celebration. I felt disgusted with the way people treat the Earth with litter. We filled 3 garbage bags and there was still more we were unable to pick up. It felt good being able to help our community and the Earth.
We also volunteer to make sandwiches for the homeless and donate them to the shelter.-
Crystal Shnitser 4/28/2025 6:18 AMWe each had those grabber tools which were great for picking up small objects. We picked up a lot of cigarrette butts :-( -
Catherine Feit 4/28/2025 5:22 AMWe did our own little trash pickup on our block Saturday. It is both depressing and energizing at the same time. Overwhelming but I did something. Got me thinking about all the little candies, lozenges, etc. that are foil wrapped, or cellophane wrapped. Small and challenging to pick up and there are a lot of them. :( -
Sharon Knauss 4/28/2025 4:04 AM- Educator 🧠
We do a lot of recycling through our church in Brook Park. We have several cardboard containers that we fill will cardboard, paper products, etc. We also have a clothes recycling bin. We encourage our community to recycle with these various options as it reduces items placed in landfills.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt WorkWhat have you found to be the biggest pros and cons of working from home?
Crystal Shnitser 4/23/2025 8:25 AMPros- not having to use gas, no commute, being home when my kids get home from school, I feel I am more productive when home because I am not chatting with people in the office
Cons-I guess not seeing people but I am ok with that lol-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt HomeWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Crystal Shnitser 4/23/2025 8:22 AMI learned they are more like a best by date. We reduce food waste at home by only making enough food that we are able to eat. We always eat leftovers (up to 4 days old) and rarely ever throw any food away. Some additional ways I can reduce food waste is by buying only what we need so we don't forget that we have it.-
