Katie's actions
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 50 items.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Health & Well-being
Less Screen Time
I will replace 120 minute(s) of screen time per day with other activities, and limit my social media use to once per day.
One Healthcare
Environmental Footprint of Healthcare
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the environmental footprint of the healthcare industry, how it impacts health, and ways I can help reduce it.
At Home
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 12 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
At Work
Turn It Off
I will turn my computer monitor(s) off at my work station when not in use to save energy (I will follow my organization's IT instructions for keeping on, turning off, or restarting computers).
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Work
Report a Leak
I will prevent water from being wasted by reporting one or more leaky faucets, toilets, or other water leaks to my organization's facilities team for repair.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 20 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
Health & Well-being
Learn About Constructive Communication
I will spend 30 minute(s) learning about constructive communication.
At Home
Repair an Item
I will repair an item, such as clothing or an appliance, for myself, a friend, family member, or neighbor.
At Work
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes learning about which items are recyclable both at my workplace and at home since they may be different, and recycle only those items.
In Our Communities
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
One Healthcare
Climate Change Impacts on Health
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the ways climate change impacts health.
At Work
Greener Purchasing
I will select a greener option when purchasing supplies, such as products that have environmental certifications, less packaging, or other environmental attributes, or come from local vendors.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Learn About Constructive CommunicationWhat is one way you would like to improve your communication skills? Why is constructive communication important at work and at home?
Katie Tebbs 4/14/2024 2:25 AMI would like to actually speak what is on my mind and not what I think people would like to hear. Constructive communication promotes different ways of thinking, which eventually makes teams more productive and creative. More importantly, it makes relationships between coworkers stronger by supporting open communication, active listening, and compromise, and by turning disagreements into chances to learn and grow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Practice the 5 r'sWhich of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?
Katie Tebbs 4/14/2024 2:15 AMEasiest -> recycle, we do that everyday. Hardest -> refuse, I can always find a reason to buy something.-
Jackie Luehmann 4/14/2024 1:34 PMI completely agree with you. I don't know how many times I walk into a store and talk myself into buying things that are not on my list especially when there are sales or after holiday discounts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Learn the Truth about Expiration DatesWhat did you learn about expiration dates? How do you reduce food waste at home? What are some additional ways you can reduce food waste?
Katie Tebbs 4/09/2024 10:01 PMThe "sell by" date is primarily meant for retailers and specifies the latest day the goods should be sold. It guarantees that clients have adequate time to use the goods after purchasing. The "use by" and "best buy" date is the manufacturer's suggestion for the last date when the product is believed to be in its best quality.
Only getting the things we need helps my family waste less food, and at the end of the week, we eat leftovers from the meals during the week.-
Zoe Anastas (SWMC) 4/10/2024 9:40 AMI agree! I use the date as a guide and then use the smell test. If it smells bad then it is bad...The date on egg cartons I totally disregard as refrigerated eggs seem to last a super long time. -
Stephanie Kresic 4/10/2024 5:01 AMThis is great, Katie! This is what we are trying to do as well.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Katie Tebbs 4/09/2024 9:47 PMThe practice of creativity motivates mindfulness, which enables one to concentrate on what is genuinely important and prevents one from becoming weighed down by distractions that are not necessary. Through the practice of mindfulness, you can simplify your thoughts, behaviors, and routines that you do around the house. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Katie Tebbs 4/05/2024 2:39 AMI like to read so this challenge was quite easy, it just gave me a reason to read my book for longer. >.< -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Turn It OffWas this action easy to add to your daily routine? Why or why not?
Katie Tebbs 4/04/2024 3:45 AMIt was definitely not easy. I still need to work on it because I didn't do it every time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Switch to Cold WaterHow else can you reduce the environmental footprint of clothing and textiles?
Katie Tebbs 4/04/2024 3:43 AMI will buy less clothing and if I do need something, I will buy it from a donation center. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Donate ItemsWhy is it important to consider how and to whom you donate your no-longer-needed items?
Katie Tebbs 4/02/2024 10:20 PMDonating gently used items helps keep the overfilled landfills from becoming even more harmful to our oceans. It also helps struggling families in need by reducing the prices of items so that they can afford essentials like clothing.
