Cecilia's actions
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 1 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Home
Practice the 5 r's
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
At Work
Report a Leak
I will prevent water from being wasted by reporting one or more leaky faucets, toilets, or other water leaks to my organization's facilities team for repair.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Health & Well-being
Taking Steps to Promote Well-being
I will increase my step count by 500 each day and will take breaks from sitting by briefly getting up and moving once per hour during the day.
At Work
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
At Work
Greener Purchasing
I will select a greener option when purchasing supplies, such as products that have environmental certifications, less packaging, or other environmental attributes, or come from local vendors.
Health & Well-being
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health & Well-being
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 15 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
One Healthcare
Environmental Footprint of Healthcare
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the environmental footprint of the healthcare industry, how it impacts health, and ways I can help reduce it.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch? How did you feel after spending time outdoors?
Cecilia Wright 4/30/2024 6:03 PMI noticed the birds. I heard a cardinal (which is the only song I recognize) and I stopped to look for him. The male and female cardinals sound different. It’s nice to take a few minutes to look at the birds. -
Cecilia Wright 4/25/2024 2:25 PMI had heard that wind turbine blades were not recyclable, so last night I decided to look into that claim. I discovered that they are 85-95% recyclable. Also, solar panels are recyclable. But in the USA, it is cheaper to throw them away than to recycle them, so that is what most of the companies do here. It is a different story in Europe were is cheaper to recycle them. The majority of them do get recycle properly. I thought it was really interesting.
I also learned that many solar panels are replaced before they are completely used up because people want the latest technology. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people? What is your favorite meatless dish or recipe?
Cecilia Wright 4/24/2024 9:13 AMThe increase need for land for grazing leads to the destruction of wooded areas. Too many animals in an area can lead to diseases and soil destruction. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Greener PurchasingWhat green attributes do you look for when making purchasing decisions?
Cecilia Wright 4/22/2024 8:40 AMI prefer to buy things from local manufacturers. I also look for less packaging. When I buy fresh produce from the store, I try not to use those thin plastic bags unless I am buying a lot of an item or it is wet. Usually, I don't need it. -

the photo didn’t post with my post. Maybe it will work now.-

Cecilia Wright 4/21/2024 11:41 AMThese are the bottom of my favorite Birkenstocks. Did you know that you can get them resoled? I did the bottom half a few years ago and it looks like I will have to re-sole the top half this year. It is one way to keep wearing your favorite shoes. I go to a place on Grand Ave right by Fratelone’s. Check to see if you can re-sole your favorite boot or shoe instead of putting it in the landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Work Recycling ChampionWhen did you learn about recycling? Why is recycling important to you?
Cecilia Wright 4/18/2024 1:37 PMI have been recycling for a long time. Recycling is important because there are limited resources in the world and we need to reuse what we have. I try to create as little trash as possible by donating items in good shape or creating something new out of the old. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Well-being Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Cecilia Wright 4/16/2024 7:17 AMI can go on more walks with my husband and hikes with my friend.
I prefer to run outdoors, so I already enjoy nature while doing that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Environmental Footprint of HealthcareWhat surprised you most about the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health? What is one action you can take to make a positive impact?
Cecilia Wright 4/11/2024 10:42 AMWhat surprised me the most was that the healthcare industry contributes to a higher percentage of gashouse emissions than aerospace! That is crazy! And that anesthesia contributes a lot to the amounts. I didn't realize that it was just pumped out into the air and not filtered or anything.-
Cecilia Wright 4/12/2024 8:57 AMThere is a lot of waste that has nothing to do with infection control. There is excessive packaging waste. Items not being used because the doctor who requested them has moved on and there is no standardization across the hospital. Choosing reusable instruments over disposable ones. Waste can't all be eliminated, but there are places it can be reduced without compromising patient care. -
Parvathi Raja 4/11/2024 10:50 AMHealthcare industry is one of the hardest to implement the reduce, reuse and recycle due to its sensitivity and infection control procedures involved. One time use products are unavoidable in healthcare and this adds a lot of waste which ends up in incinerators and that doesn't have any good impacts on climate. If this is compromised, then we are compromising on health. It's a delicate balance and hence it's the most challenging. Using reusable products where there are no chances of infection is one step. Especially using reusable gowns and sheets when there is no procedure involved and when you know the chances of bodily fluids leaking is not a concern. It comes with another challenge of storing multiple products. There is no real win.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAt Home Practice the 5 r'sWhich of the 5 R's was easiest for you? Which was the most difficult? How did practicing the 5 R's help you reduce more waste than recycling alone?
Cecilia Wright 4/08/2024 6:24 AMThe easiest thing for me is to refuse bags at the store. Either I use a reusable one that I have in my purse or just carry items in my hands or pockets. I will also reuse plastic bags I do have. I also take my old clothes to the thrift store and buy my "new" clothes there.-
