One recent action that stemmed from the work of the ESSC at Orlando Health was changing the generic product we stocked for albuterol metered dose inhalers (MDIs). MDIs are medicaitons used by patients with certain lung diseases like asthma and COPD to help control their disease and treat symptoms. The propellant used in these medicaitons is the largest medication source of greenhouse gases in the United States because it is a refrigerant with an outsized impact on trapping heat. While we look to federal legislators and pharmaceutical companies to take action to change the type of propellant used in these MDIs, we are reviewing which choices are best currently, and found that the product we were stocking had a higher impact than other options. Now we will be stocking the best product, a generic version of Proventil, to decrease the impact of the heat-trapping effect of the metered dose inhalers we dispense at Orlando Health.
