Sell-By Date: Refers to the last day a retailer can display a product for sale; typically a food is safe to eat for 10 days after the Sell-by Date if refrigerated properly. Use-By Date: Refers to the last day a product will maintain its optimum freshness, flavor, and texture.
I am happy to learn that "California Passes First-of-its-Kind Legislation Standardizing 'Best By' Dates on Food; Bans 'Sell By'" which goes into effect July 1, 2026.
I hope this new bill will help clarify confusion with Sell By vs. Use By dates printed on food packaging and reduce food waste!
Another option to help reduce food waste is buying food that is too "ugly" to be sold in a grocery store. Imperfect foods just started to deliver in my area so I haven't been able to try them yet. Grocery Delivery for Organic Food, Fresh Produce & More
