Victoria's actions
One Healthcare
Environmental Footprint of Healthcare
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the environmental footprint of the healthcare industry, how it impacts health, and ways I can help reduce it.
In Our Communities
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
At Home
Learn the Truth about Expiration Dates
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Health & Well-being
Learn About Constructive Communication
I will spend 20 minute(s) learning about constructive communication.
At Home
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
In Our Communities
Support Diverse and Locally-Owned Businesses
I will promote equity and support my community by purchasing items at 5 diverse- and/or locally-owned businesses.
At Work
Greener Purchasing
I will select a greener option when purchasing supplies, such as products that have environmental certifications, less packaging, or other environmental attributes, or come from local vendors.
One Healthcare
Strength in Numbers
I will form a new green team or healthcare sustainability group.
At Work
Last to Leave? Lights Out, Please!
Lighting makes up approximately 10% of hospitals' energy use on average. I will save energy by turning off unnecessary lights when not in use and when I am the last one to leave a space.
At Work
Recycling Champion
I will recycle 5 items at work and/or at home each day, making sure I review recycling program guidelines and only place accepted items that are clean, empty, and dry in the recycling bin.
At Work
Use Reusables at Work
I will keep 3 forks, spoons, and/or knives from entering the landfill by using reusable utensils when eating at work.
At Home
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
At Home
Brush My Teeth Without Water Running
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
At Home
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health & Well-being
Go Get a Check Up
I will make 2 appointments to support my health and well-being (primary care provider, dental, vision, etc.)
In Our Communities
Donate Items
I will help others in need and prevent useful items from going to landfill by donating 10 items.
Health & Well-being
Do Nature Activities
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 10 minute(s) each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)

Victoria Woodbury 4/19/2024 8:22 AMyesterday i was out in my garden and noticed a mushroom growing in the soil, i didnt know what this meant and turns out that all of the leaves and cardboard i threw in there are breaking down properly! with the amount of rain we got and organic matter in the beds, it's providing a healthy food web of nutrients for my plants! im so excited to start planting!!!-
Josh Yamauchi (St. Francis Regional Medical Center) 4/21/2024 2:48 PMThat’s great, Victoria. Mushrooms are so good in many different meals and have wonderful digestive Benefits! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONOne Healthcare Environmental Footprint of HealthcareWhat surprised you most about the healthcare industry's impact on climate and health? What is one action you can take to make a positive impact?
Victoria Woodbury 4/16/2024 11:05 AMi didnt realize that the healthcare industry had such a big carbon footprint. im reading from an MPR article that says the industry produces over 8.5 percent of the US's carbon footprint. i truly believe that reusing and recycling can make a difference despite how small the action may be. other hospitals are using different gases for anesthesia to using reusable supplies like sensors and even hiring "energy engineers" to help reduce that footprint.-
sara mileni 4/17/2024 6:47 AMThat is awesome research! great job!

REFLECTION QUESTIONIn Our Communities Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Victoria Woodbury 4/16/2024 9:38 AMusing salt on the driveway in the winter might make life easier, but it is important to find ways to reduce the salt chemical runoff when it melts. it can harm wildlife, lakes, streams, rivers etc. Sand is a good alternative!!! i put a rug on my doorstep to avoid ice buildup! -
Victoria Woodbury 4/16/2024 9:15 AMthis morning i put three 5 gallon buckets out in the yard to collect todays rainwater for my garden to use when it gets hot and dry. this saves me time and money in the long run!-
Josh Yamauchi (St. Francis Regional Medical Center) 4/17/2024 7:07 AMGood idea, Victoria. I'm starting a garden this week & will give this a try!
